I want to hear from high mile owners on how many miles a XKR will go before a major rebuild is required.

High mileage isn't the critical factor with an XK8/XKR. Although many members do keep their Jaguars as a second vehicle for weekend use and accumulate low miles, we have members using them as daily drivers approaching 200K miles.

The most important factor with any Jaguar you are considering is service history. Regular maintenance is essential for reliability. Any gaps in the history should be considered suspect.

If you check the HOW TO thread at the top of this forum, you will find three issues cause most difficulties with this model:

1. tensioners - failure of early plastic type
2. cooling - or more accurately overheating due to sticking thermostat / failed water pump
3. transmission - the so called 'sealed for life' which does require fluid changes

Without appropriate repairs and maintenance, an XK8/XKR could be trashed in very low miles.

As Graham said, serious mechanical problems are pretty rare provided that the car is not neglected and maintenance is kept up. Lack of use is common problem for these 2nd cars and can lead to things like seals drying out and starting to leak.

It may also depend on your definition of "major" as there are some simple things that can be labor intensive (expensive) repairs.

For example, hoses need to be replaced after a certain age on any engine, but the R model Jaguar has two of them routed under the supercharger, meaning that you have to dismantle a significant part of the intake and remove the supercharger to get at them. The parts are inexpensive, but it is a lot of work, so paying someone for this simple job can be a major expense.

there was a recent thread discussing mileage milestones with at least 1 XK8/R over 230K (Avos). Several of us in the low 100's and a few in the upper 100's. I just hit 119K and drive mine daily - at this stage it is maintaining and addressing normal wear/tear issues that are encountered. I have posted the link below if you want to check it out.

The dealer (AutoSource Dallas) that has this car on eBay is less than 2 miles from my office. If you are serious about this one, I would be happy to go by and check on anything you wanted to know or had a question about.

Just let me know.

Rick700,
My 2002 XKR will hit 130,000 miles this week or next. I purchased it about 4 years ago with 62,000 miles on it. Obviously, I use it as a daily driver. It's funny, but it is more reliable now, runs better and stronger than when I purchased it. Now in the 4 years I have had to do many of the maintenance problems that have plagued these cars, however, I bought a nearly mint car almost 4 years ago for about $15,000.00. I still consider it the best as well as cheapest car I have ever purchased in 44 years of driving. One of the reasons I purchased this car besides its condition and price, is that it had a 2" thick file of every service and repair ever done on the car at the local Jaguar dealership. This, without even looking further into it, told me that the previous owner was conscientious. The fact that it was my favorite color, Carnival Red with black interior, was just icing on the cake. Jaguar ownership will not be cheap, however, these cars will go 2-300k with no problem with proper maintenance and an allowance for repairs. Don't be afraid!

I have contacted them and they are checking for records now. The car was serviced in Dallas at a Jag dealership. If it would not be too much trouble I would love to have a third party with experience look at the car for me. If you can do this ,let me know. Thank you in advance.

That's a generous offer from Mike to check the vehicle for you. Can't beat a set of independent, experienced eyes for an appraisal.

For others with insatiable curiosity, here's the dealer's ad:

2000 Jaguar XK8 Supercharged Addison, Texas | AutoSource Dallas

Only the chrome wheels would be too much for me!

That looks like a very nice car. At least the detailing has been done correctly, and for a convertible in Texas seems to have very little sun bleaching.
There is no noticible damage to the seat bolster.
Also note the original three dial set as oposed to the ridiculously outdated Nav system. With the addition of White XKR's realguage mod, you are set.

Go for it.

Car is gorgeous!! Love the color, painted calipers, drilled rotors, even the chromed double nickles. Hmmm, I might have to have mine chromed. The Car looks new. Hope it checks out for you. Good luck. 130,000 miles, looking and running better than ever.

I've edited your personal eMail address or the spybots will soon pick it up and your Inbox will be full of spam. All Mike has to do is replace the dot com with .com to eMail you.

I hope the check works out and the deal goes through OK.

I know this probably looks odd because its my first post ( just bought an 03 xkr from the mecum auction about a month ago), but I bought my wifes car from that place about a year ago, and they are good people. They do a heck of a job detailing them. They seem to be cautious with what they carry. We got an 06 e90 330i from them and its been 100% trouble free. I'd recommend them.

Rick,

I went to see the car today. I sent you an email to your personal account with my observations and comments. Looks like a pretty nice car.

Good Luck!
