Default How to pull codes when check engine light comes on

Do you need to get an ODB2 reader to pull any error codes or is there a manual way to get them.

Came from a Nissan 350Z and with that there was a complex system of pressing accelerator pedal in a series of presses and light would blink to indicate error number and you used this method to clear the engine light.

So is there a similar method for my 54 plate XKR?

Yes, Theres some cheap ELM327 readers on ebay that do the job ok, wont read Jag specific codes but will clear you MIL light and provide some useful basic functions with readily available software.
