Replace all of them?

With a replacement ECU, mine now idles smoothly and is driveable. Shop manager is driving it home which is a 5 mile trip. Back the next morning. Says he'd driven 1,000 XK8's while managing the garage. Has also brought home Rolls Royces, Bentley's, Ferrari's, Porsches and other exotics. Recent was a McLaren. Great job benefits!

Says some XK8's are super reliable and never break. Others show up in his garage on a monthly basis. Maybe it's the car and the maintenance. Maybe it's the owner and how it's driven. LOL says maybe it's based on the day it was built

Ok, looks like I'm hunting down a bad ignition coil. You know, I just changed the plugs, but never looked hard enough at the connector to say if I have 2 wire or 4-wire coils. Anyone know if I can tell by year or vin#?

Since I remember that each side has different coils, I figure the previous owner changed 4 of them. My plan will be to swap 1 side, drive evaluate, then either go with that or move to other side. Sound good?

Searches so far are showing on Denso brand cost like $150 each! Is that what you've found?

OTOH once I figure out 2 vs 4 wire I can buy 8 from say, parts geek for less than that! Any experience with price or reliable non Denso to share?

Vin: 2240wc022434

Thanks,

John

John,
You'll have the 2-wire coils on a 98.

Can't advise on replacement source other than there seems to be a variety of duff aftermarket stuff out there...

Good luck!

My car had 8 cheap coils. No brand name. After all the other repairs, car ran smoothly for 1 day then misfire/rough idle suddenly came back. My indie replaced all junk coils with Jag OEM (he had a set sitting around). End of problem.
Did a quick price check. $150 sounds high. Jag OEM $132 (can probably find cheaper), NGK (good brand) $75/each. If you can afford it, spend the money. My indie sees problems all the time caused by cheap parts.
