Default I think my gear box is toast

Yesterday while driving home, my trans made loud “clunk” and slowed down. “Gear box fault” showed up as an issue along with the yellow light and MIL light. After my heart slowed down a bit, I found that I could “limp” home using only a higher gear, maybe 4th or 5th. Pick up was very slow, but ran OK at 45 – 50 MPH. Later I checked the codes and found P1722, which seems to be nothing good. Upon later inspection, I found that reverse seems to work fine and the yellow light along with the gear box fault was off when I started it back up but returned as soon as I put it into drive with the accompanying clunk. I think my next step is to take it in to a shop unless there is something else I can check. At 64,000 miles, I changed the fluid and filter and I did a drain and refill of the trans at 94,000 miles, about 2,000 miles ago using Wolf’s Head Synthetic ATF, maybe that was not a great idea. Anything else I should check before taking it in to the shop. I am planning on taking it to a local trans shop that has been in the area for ever and I have used them over the years many times. I talk to them and they have worked on BMW, M-B and Lincolns with the ZF 5 speed but never a Jaguar. There are some local shops that work on European cars, but I have never had any dealings with them. Any thoughts on taking it to a local trans shop vs. a specialty shop. Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.

It's the A drum failure from your description. I would probably go with the trans. shop that you know.

ouch -exactly what happened to me a month or so ago. If the shop has worked on ZF's then I don't think it should be an issue. I went to my indie for them to diagnose and they ended up sending out to a local transmission shop for rebuild - so ended up with about $900 extra in labor.

That is kinda what I thought. I'm thinking about $3,500 - $5,000 sound about right?

I can't add anything to what has already been said but sympathy.

Hope you get repairs completed without too big a hit.

Glenn - that is about the range. Mine was $3500 with a 2 yr/24K mile warranty, but I know a few others chimed in to my thread with prices up to $5k. Hopefully yours can be done on the lower end.

Glenn,
Had my '97 XK8 tranny replaced with an upgraded rebuilt over the winter for $4400.00 with 18 month warranty. Works much better than original unit so far.

Just got my Jaguar back last week. Just under $5,000 but had them replace all four oxygen sensors while they had access. 18 month / 18K miles warranty. So far it seems very good. Going to Auburn, IN this weekend, about a 4 hour drive from Chicago so we will see if all is good.

That sounds a reasonable cost and it's a good warranty. Not many give more than 12 months.
