You're right that was painful!
As an aside just wondering if anyone has ever used rust converter (obviously the above pics are well past using). I recently bought a Ford Ranger that lived most of it's life in Pennsylvania. Exterior near perfect but, underneath/frame was pretty rusty. I always thought rust converters were a bit of a scam. After a lot of research I went with Gemplers rust converter $20 per qt. Was easy to apply with spray bottle and cheap paint brush. You don't have to get to bare metal before applying just knock down any flaking rust. The stuff in contact with rust turns it to a stable hard black finish which takes a top coat of oil based paint (Rustoleum) really nicely. All I can say is the stuff really works. All my car buddies can't believe how good it came out and neither can I. Give it a try before things get out of hand.
