Or even the '02 4.0L car. Since the Lincoln LS used the same engine in '02, are the coil packs usable?

Default Ignition Coils

In reviewing old threads I see no one answered this. I was wondering the same thing (for future reference) i.e. will Ford or Lincoln coils exchange for a Jag and if anyone knows what is the year and model and engine of Ford/Lincoln was used.

A quick search of an auto parts site indicates that the Lincoln LS coil packs are the two conductor type vs the Jaguar 4.0L using the 4 conductor. So that doesn't work.

Using another parts site and searching on the part number produced only '99 - '02 Jaguar applications. Guess we are stuck but the Rock Auto site did have them for $66.

AJV8s were introduced with 2-pin coils and separate ignition control modules, then upgraded to 4-pin coils and no separate control modules. The split occurred appoximately around the AJ26 to AJ27 shift, but I am unsure if it changed exactly at that time because there was a 2000 MY engine management upgrade. In Fred's car (98) it is surely 2-pin coils if the engine is original. I don't know if the Lincoln/T-Bird used 2- pin or 4, or both with a changeover.

From my understanding it was when the 4.2s came out the coil packs were changed to the 4 pin digital as apposed to the 4.0 2 pin analogue.

I have 4-pins on my 02 4.0L with no ignition control modules with a build date of 11-01

Me too.

The on-line application chart would indicate, as steve11 says, somewhere around the AJ26/27 change over. Lincoln LS were 2 pin through '02.

My 2002 XKR has 4-wire coils. The wire colors are Black, Yellow, Blue and Red with tracer colors too.

When I changed the Secondary Tensioners on my Car, I noted the 4 pin Coil Connectors. The 2000 MY Electrical Diagram Set shows 4 Pin Coils for all Engine Configurations.

1997-1998 are 2-pin coils for sure(shared with the XJ of similar years). When I was doing research to replace two of my coils, I noticed that it changed to 4-pin in 1999.

Now, the question is.. Are they interchangable with lincoln LS coils?? I would LOVE to replace the other 6 used ones...

As noted above, the Lincoln LS used the 2 pin coils at least through '02. Rock Auto's $66 for the correct 4 pin ones puts the price down into the non-Jaguar world.

hey i'll chime in.when i got my 99 xk8,it ran good for 2 blocks.drove it home and got my son to look it over.it turned out to be a coil.ordered one from local parts store.took 3 days, well it was listed as a 2 prong and i needed a 4 prong.so the change is somewhere in the 99 model year. had to be sent back for correct one..steven

That's pretty much the AJ26/AJ27 split.

AJ26 has 2 pin connector (Denso)
AJ27 has 4 pin connector (Denso)
AJ28 has 2 pin connector (Ford)

Here is a pic of the AJ26 and the AJ28 coils
I looked for a coil AJ27 but could not find one laying around in the shop.

Ford and Denso can not be interchanged.

I have been doing Jaguar XKs for about 6 years now and I have never seen the coil pack you are showing on the left, which throws back to my statement of "I have never come across a 4pin 4.0........"
Even my own late MY2000 XKR has 2 pin, I have worked on 2002 MY XKs with only 2 pin, all I can say is this must be peculiar to the US, as far as I am concerned 4 pin didn't come in until the 4.2, this is why if you do a 4.0 to a 4.2 engine swap you have to use your old electrics/ancillaries and coil packs.....Curious..

@xkracer
Interesting, as far as I know the 4 pin came with the AJ27 engine, so from 1999 for the NA cars and 2000 for the SC cars (my late my2000 has 4 pins). I just double checked with the JTIS electrical diagrams, and that shows the same. Could this be just a british thing ???

The AJ33/34 (so 4.2 engine) has also 4 pin, but is different again (digital iirc), so that is why you need to reuse your 4 pin from the AJ27.

Have not yet seen an AJ28 engine, so can't comment on those coils.

I spose the UK could be the peculiar ones

It is rather strange I must admit, perhaps I have just had a lot of strange XKs to deal with (nothing unusual there).

But I am adamant I have not come across a 4pin 4.0ltr

The one on the left is of the 4.0 S-type jag. Basically the same engines, with cheaper parts. I wish there was a cost effective way of replacing all 8 coils on my XK8. At current prices, I'm looking at close to $1,000!.. Crazy..
