Personally, I'm a bit disappointed. That car looks way too nice to inspire any decent repair videos.

Seriously, welcome back, congratulations, and thanks!

Best news I have heard all day.

Your expertise, willingness to share knowledge and great sense of humor have been sorely missed.

Buy the car.

OK... so here's the deal:

I had forgotten how AWESOME it feels to press the gas pedal to the floor and feel the G's push me back into the seat. And with the R that feeling is even better. I drove it for about 20 minutes and stomping on that gas pedal never got old.

The car has a few cosmetic issues. Nothing major. There no bent metal. The leather is looking worn. It's not torn or anything, and all of the seams are intact, but it's definitely showing it's age. I don't know if there is any way to restore the leather.

The front bumper has been repainted... badly. It had all sorts of chips in it and whoever repainted it just painted over the chips, It might have even been spray painted. It looks fine from 10 feet, but from 3 feet it looks terrible. The front right fog light lens is missing, which makes me wonder if someone dinged the bumper and repainted it at home. I could live with it for a little while, but I'd eventually have to get a professional to repaint it or it would drive me crazy.

The convertible top is showing some wear. Once again, it looks fine from 10 feet but a little ragged from 3. It functions properly. The owner had a stack of maintenance records and it didn't appear as if the hoses had ever been replaced. The pump was replaced a couple of years ago. A few years ago I remember a thread where people were discussing the effect that the car's color has on the hoses. If I remember correctly, dark cars were more susceptible to the green shower. Since this one is white, maybe the hoses are fine. But maybe they aren't. Does anyone know how to keep that hose from popping?

Mechanically it seemed to be in great condition. The engine was strong. There was no record that the timing chain tensioners had ever been replaced, and that is concerning. I'd have to check them and possibly replace them before I did any driving. That would mean I'd have to clean out my garage, and that would turn the tensioner job into a 3 week project (my garage is a mess right now). How long does it take to change the tensioners? How much do they cost? Three years ago I would have known that off the top of my head.

So anyway, I'm torn. He's asking $8,900 for an '02 with 150,000 miles on it. I could talk him down some, but I don't know if it's worth it with all of those miles. How many miles can I really expect from that engine?

And here's the kicker: Maybe the seller is just bullshitting me, but he said that on Monday he's leaving the country for a month. I basically have to make a decision tonight, otherwise there's no time to get the title transferred before he leaves town.

I DID have a big smile on my face every time I pressed that gas pedal.

Depends on how much faith you have. I think "you" could fix anything that came up. I'm no expert, but that seems a bit high for 150K miles. Lower the price and get it.

Call his bluff, if he's really heading out he'll be keen to do a deal.
02 might be OK for tensioners. August 13, 2001 was the date for the change in the plant but you would need to check.

For leather restoration I use Leatherique Home Page | Leatherique Restoration Products it is amazing. The restorer will bring back dry leather and the cleaner is great.

I'm often surprised reading the forum at how low the mileages are on US members Jaguars compared to similar models here in the UK. Mileage has never really put me off a used Jaguar provided the history backs up the appropriate maintenance. I've bought a few with just over 100k but I'd start to think again seriously at 150k.

We do have very few member who have exceeded 150k with their XK8/XKR's but this is the exception. On the plus side, the high milers generally report great reliability.

It looks like 250k miles could be easily attainable with proper maintenance but the question has to be whether it would have any residual value by then.

Tough choice when you clearly like the car.

Graham

02 xkr with 150,000 and you must decide now! What a offer, the R do have a higher asking but you might consider the cost of repairs/paint/seats (sklimii just got new covers, check his thread) and buy up instead of repaint etc... mechanically the SC will need rebuilt if not already done, that's alot of miles on the eaton, and recoated (or swapped). I understand you have a wide knowledge of the car, more than most and now that the bug hit you again (you were just in remission) I look forward to your new posts. There are alot of great cars out there.

check KBB for an estimated value - I'd say maybe $8900 if in excellent condition but it has flaws so I'd offer between $6900 - 7500 and see what he says.

replacement seat covers from topsonline run 700 for the set plus material to cover the center console.

hope you can work a deal
