Graham thanks for post, do you think that I should do another hard drive reset, now the car has been driven,? It wont do any damage will it?. Also I have read fault codes on abs, codes C1155 and C1145 left and right wheel speed sensor circuit front electrical failure, Looks like somebody has been at the abs unit trying to prise it apart with a screwdriver so maybe that fault was on the car when I bought it, My main problem is the gearbox, any help would be great thanks catra.

 

If you've gone though the sequence of a hard reset, battery disconnect, replacement pack, then battery reconnect, another hard reset won't do any harm but is unlikely to make any change.

So the situation now is:
1. P1638 comes back immediately
2. brake switch still needs attention / replacement
3. C1145 and C1155 ABS codes have appeared

Provided you can rely on the replacement Instrument Pack being OK and the right batch code for the vehicle, it can be eliminated fron the possible faults and it's on to circuit checks.

The DTC summary for P1638 is:

Fault
CAN INST token missing

Default Action
None
Engine speed and coolant temperature data missing at instrument pack

Possible Causes
INST failure
CAN open circuit fault – INST to ECM
CAN short circuit fault
ECM failure

You'll need to carry out the pinpoint test detailed in the Module Communications Network section of JTIS. Have you downloaded this?

Don't think it will. You're going to have to check the circuit as the next stage in troubleshooting.

For the codes C1155 and C1145, the first action with ABS codes is to clean the wheel sensors and check their harnesses. I'd still do this first although when you posted 'looks like somebody has been at the ABS unit trying to prise it apart with a screwdriver' there may be more wrong with the system than just dirty sensors.

Graham thanks for reply, P1638 code has not returned, no fault codes for instrument cluster, so looks as if cluster is ok. Have P0706 code come up, that I cleared and has come back as pending, inhibitor switch range signal out of range. also have cleared abs codes, The abs light stays out until vehicle moves. I will check sensors at hubs, when I can get underneath. Any help on P0706, would be good, do you think that this could be making Tracksion control and stability control /gearbox fault message come up on Cluster ? Thanks catra.

The ABS will stay out until the vehicle moves - the fixed wheel sensors pick up a signal as the wheels rotate. ABS warning is just that - a warning. It's telling you the ABS is not operating and the vehicle will respond as if it was not fitted with ABS. This accounts for your Trac/Stability Control warning.

P0706 is a transmission code. Indicates a problem with the Rotary Switch on the transmission which puts the transmission into Limp Home mode, restricting it to fourth gear. This accounts for your gearbox warning.

Thanks Graham, so this rotory switch is on the gearbox, can I test it ? or do I need to get a new/replacemet one. Any Idea how much a new one would be ? , what does it look like ?. Thanks catra.

 

The code is "Rotary Switch and/or D-4 switch malfunction"

The Rotary Switch is held onto the side of the transmission with two 10 mm bolts. Often only needs taking off and cleaning. The D-4 switch is a microswitch in the gear selector. Again can be dirty and not necessarily broken.

I've not had one fail but there's been plenty of posts from others who have.

Thanks Graham, this Jtis download looks tricky for me, I have clicked on link to the D4 switch and downloaded but I cannot open. I have removed the rotary switch and cleaned, But did not disconect wires, have not road tested yet. I have cleaned Abs sensor RH, Should ABS sensors have earth Leads from sensor bolt to brake hoses? As these are broken. Thanks catra.

 

I have exactly the same problem after jump starting the car with a portable battery pack which may have more than 12 volts. I did not follow the "vehicle Care" instructions which said "Permanent instrument pack damage may occur" In an attempt to "reset" I disconnected the battery and reconnected with the ignition on - a real no-no!
My IPK no. is lja4300af/001 a 1997 XK8. Are these still available or repairable? I saw a name of a company in Minnesota that re-programed/repaired. It was posted in this forum. I'll see if I can find it again and repost it. It is difficult to reset the mileage, but I can live with that... Any help will be appreciated!

Used ones on eBay are not too expensive. Your best bet for compatibility without reprogramming is to get one from another '97.

 

I don't know if it is possible but can ASI repair the insturment pack? I don't know if anybody has had it done. It wouldn't hurt to give them a call to find out.

 

Old post, but it answers a question for me. So if I can find an XJ8 instrument cluster with adaptive cruise control ( this is what I am looking for) you suggest I can fit it into my XKR without worrying about potential anti-theft stuff kicking in? Does everything work - all lights and so on?
