Interior door handle issue

Assuming the door is not out of adjustment and binding on the striker, you need to determine whether it's the interior handle/operating cable or the door latch assembly causing the resistance and delay. The door card will have to be removed to do this.

The interior handle pulls the cable (arrowed in blue) connected through the rod (arrowed in red) to release the door latch.
On the four door saloons, cable fraying or breakage is a regular issue. I haven't come across this on an XK8/XKR but it would make opening the door difficult if it was frayed.
If the cable is OK, the door latch micro switches could be at fault.
