the intermittent aspect of this problem had me looking for a bad ground, or loose connector. All to no avail. Finally, I bit the bullet and purchased a used amplifier on ebay at a cost of $33.00. Yes, I bought the cheapest one listed.

I was hesitant to go this route because I had no way to test the existing amplifier and I prefer not to to blindly throw parts at a problem.

But this time, I lucked out. The used amp was all that was needed. Music to my ears.
