Default Intolerable squeaky sound!!!

OK, I don't know about anyone else, but any sort of rattle or squeaky sound in any car I drive, drives me absolutely crazy.

My jag is a toy, so I typically only drive it when I can put the top down. I needed to drive it today because my other vehicle was in the shop, and with temperatures over 90 degrees, I left the top up today.

I was getting a squeaky sound that was driving me crazy all day for the 125 miles I drove.

When I got home, I sprayed lubricant all over everything on by the passenger door, where the sound was coming from. Drove it around a bit, still squeaking.

OK, ultimately, I figured out is must have something to do with the top. Put the top down, drove it and no sound. Took some Liquid Wrench (now someone will come along and say that you should use silicone) because that is what I had and sprayed all of the joints down and voila, no more squeak.

I only bring this up to mention is as a preventative measure that lubricating all of those moving parts in the convertible top is a good idea, before they start squeaking, and, it just might help the motor getting the top up and down as well.

Well done- I'll keep that in mind. I've got one coming from the passenger side dash that I'll have to track down at some point...

Ok I will do it,White Lithium grease for the joints, and silicone for the weather seals
both used sparingly and don't spray directly, use a cloth or q-tip or it may drip on the fabric.

Sentinelist, check the speaker cover, they are a common squeak point. While you have it off tighten the screws for the speaker too.

Squeak free since 2013

I do have some white lithium grease, but actually, I needed something a lot lighter that could get into the very small clearances in that mechanism. Actually, the first thing that I did was to spray it on all sides of the various joints and that did not do the job. I had to find that little straw that you can stick in the nozzle and if was only after I used that to really direct it into the joints that it finally did the job. I use white lithium grease on my salt water boat, as it holds up to water a lot better than the light oils, but it gets a little thick and gummy after a while and does not penetrate into the very tight clearances as in our roof mechanism.

That's just my $.02.

My wife has been complaining about a persistent rattle in her XK8. It sounds as if it was coming from the right rear of the trunk. But it may indeed be the ragtop frame rattling. I dropped the top this morning and sprayed my white lithium grease into every ragtop frame joint I could find. For the joints that I could not reach with my spray nozzle straw, I sprayed the grease on my finger and used it to rub the grease into the hidden joints....

Took the car out for a 40-mile joyride with the top DOWN and the tonneau cover securely in place - no more annoying rattle. We'll have to see if the rattle remains gone when the top is back up. She'll test it tonight or tomorrow....
