Default J-Gate stuck in Reverse

Today I pulled into the garage in my usual way but the XK8 had a different plan.

When I tried to put the car in Park the j-gate stopped moving when it reached Reverse and won't move in either direction.

I was still able to turn the engine off and remove the key. Fortunately car is safely inside garage.

I tried removing the torx cover and pressing the manual release but that did not work.

Any suggestions on a direction to chase this problem?

Switch? Solenoid? Linkage?

Thanks!

Sounds like the cable slipped out of its holder (if you are lucky). If your 2004 is anything like my 1997, it's located beneath the center console. Technical Service Bulletin 307-01 details the fix, which concerns the adjustment of the cable that reaches between the gearshift lever and the lever on the transmission. If you are going to do it yourself, I would first try to do all of the adjustments underneath the console. If you have to go under the car to reach the transmission lever, you will probably have to move some of the exhaust system out of the way, and that makes what seems to be an easy job, not so easy.

Well I solved it. But I can't say I "fixed" it.

I discerned that the interlock solenoid was not clicking like it usually does. Checked the fuses and brake lights. All good there so I removed the shifter trim to take a look under there. It was really odd how the shifter was stuck in the R position.

So I removed the 4 screws on the shifter control to see if that made a difference. With that control loose I was able to move the shift lever back to Park position. Also now the solenoid seems to work fine when I press the brake pedal.

Put it all back together and it works again.

I am guessing that the solenoid was stuck for some reason.

As a precaution I added the tools needed for a quick disassembly to my kit in the trunk.

Frustrating but at least it did not cost me money.
