Can anyone tell me is the plastic trim piece that indicates the gear selected available for replacement? I looked at the workshop manual and am afraid that one has to replace the entire "gear level assembly" to get a new plastic trim piece!
Hi Thanks for the reply. Maybe my description is bad....what I need is the black j gate trim that has the letters and numbers. The shifter moves in the slot in this trimnpiece to the gear selected.
That part is a challenge, AFAIK. It is part of a larger assembly, and the later 6sp part is hard to find if at all available. You are likely looking at junk yards, eBay or the better suppliers like Welsh as your options. Other more realistic option is to try and repair the part you have. Folks seem the have had good results with plastic welding if there are cracks. The cosmetic part with the graphics is a separate challenge. Some have installed a leather boot, like for a manual stick shift to cover that section. Looks good, but might be a liability for an occasional user like a valet, emissions station inspector or mechanic needing to move the car in or out of a shop as there is no on-dash indication of what gear the car is in.
Do you mean this part? They do sometimes appear on a well known auction site so you have to keep a look out. I'll be honest though, they are a rarity to see separate because they are part of the illumination of the selector.
Jaguar Classic Parts never has its pages indexed by Google but the part seems to be available here, https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...on-module.html. Different part number than above but if you look at the parts diagram I think it's just because it includes the connector listed as #4. Very good price relative, I may buy one. I bought a nice one on eBay for about $100 but the screw holes were stripped so I just removed the face and put it on mine. The plastic on the bottom is prone to breaking but I just used some JB Kwikweld for plastics and it worked out fine. The one I bought had white back lighting for gears even when not selected, which mine does not have.
A couple years ago mine started to crack up and pieces came off.
I got tired of looking at the cracks in mine so I found a cover that fit well enough. Was about 5 bucks from china.
After 70K miles in the driver seat I don't need the indicators to know what gear I am in anyway.
The stuff underneath is pretty broken up so I think I will need to buy the whole assembly which was about $500 for new the last time I checked with Jaguar Heritage.
Not sure this is a "fits all" solution because I am using an aftermarket billet bezel that had room for the material.
On my car, I replaced it with a polished aluminum version from eBay seller solar_signa. He does not usually stock them. You have to send him a private message.
While admittedly a bit over-the-top sparkly, I think that is the way to go in terms of being the last time anyone would have to deal with a broken J-Gate fascia piece....

I think the seller can anodize it black for a fee.
I ended up buying a whole shifter assembly off of car-part.com (the junkyard dealer network) from a scrapper for under $100 off a very low mileage car. Then I also had extra shifter parts for when later I had an issue with a solenoid there!
I have seen various versions of the Plate on e-bay with and without the assembly.
There is either the 2-3-4-5 version or the 2-3-4.
With two cutouts for the Cruise Control Button & Sports Mode Button at 'the bottom'
Or others with only one button for Sports Mode.
They seem to be around £45.00.
The Outer Plate with either One or TWO Cut-outs for the switch buttons.. is actually either in ABS Plastic or Solid Aluminium Chrome.
It would appear that the Inner part is Chrome coated ABS Plastic....
The Outer Plate was available from SNG Barrett in the UK.

Some where along the way, I have lost the little Screw that goes in the J-Gate Shifter.....You know, the one that No-one knows what it's for! The one you use the Key-Head to tighten. It's Black and has several groves on top.......Remember?? --- I would love to have one but I don't know where to find one.....Could you help me???
