Matter of fact, I just had that service done this past weekend by Jaguar /Land Rover/ Aston Martin of Newport Beach. You can have only the fluid flushed or have the fluid and filter replaced. The filter is a fine mesh piece that is made as part of the bottom of the trans pan - the pan assembly is replaced. They may also elecronicly "re-flash" the trans to clear shift memory. Flush and re-fill is about $400; I had the full service which was over $800 parts and labor.

Stevepaa:

Your post doesn't say what year and model Jag you have, so I'll talk generally. The transmission filter/flush is addressed fully on this Forum in a number of places.

Many people will just change the filter and fluid. Then they'll come back a couple of oil changes later and do a second fluid change only. No one seems quick to do a "power flush" on the ZF transmission that would also replace the fluid in the torque converter.

If you use non-ZF brand fluid, 8 quarts and a filter kit is just not that expensive--$75-$125 for supplies. I paid $5.09 per qt. for Castrol import multi-car ATF yesterday @ Autozone. (I'm not going to get into the ATF brand issue.) A TCM reflash is not required.

If the Jag independent shops above want too much to do the job, I'm sure there are a few hundred independent import shops in San Jose servicing the BMW fleets driven by your computer guru's. Changing Jaguar filter/fluid would just be a simple, quick little job for any independent transmission shop, as transmissions are really just generic items.

Good Luck!

Thanks,
I have a 2000 XK8. I do all my own work and have done a full flush of my 2001 Volvo xc70 but it had a dipstick through which I could replace the fluid pumped out. I looked at the JAG and there is no place to fill if not lifted. I bought the filter and gasket but am looking for a reputable shop to do a complete flush including torque converter.

The info I have says that the xk8 trans is not designed for regular maintenance, that's why there is no dipstick and fill. After seeing the parts info at the dealer, I don't know how you bought a filter unless your trans is different than my 2003.

If you don't want to use the info I posted, sorry I jumped in.

I think 2003 was the beginning of different tranny. ZF 6HP26 tranny in the 2003+ XK8s

Default Indy Shops

StevePea,

You've probably already found an Indy shop out in the beautiful Bay Area (I was born and raised just south of SJ: Gilroy) but a while back I was looking for someone here in the southeast (Dixie to be exact) for some work on my XK8. Searching the net and asking around I found a shop in So. San Fran. that I wished was out here. I dropped this shop an e-mail...they went out of their way to try and find me a shop out here...good guys and by their website they know what they're doing around these cars. Continental in South San Fran: Carlos Caicedo [info@jagservice.com]. Check them out; incidentaly I found a great Indy shop near me (well a couple hundred miles) in Memphis, TN. David's Car Repair 901-861-7133. He's got 27 years as a certified Jag mechanic who has gone out on his own. I'm currently having my tensioners, chains, water pump, thermostat housing and hoses changed-out by him at around $3.5K parts and labor. To me after getting my local dealer quote of over $6.5 just for the tensions and chains I think I'm getting a pretty good deal. And he's the type of guy when just talking to him, you know he's knowledgable about these cars and our special problems. Normally I would have jumped into these repairs myself but earlier this year (New Year Eve infact) I suffered a heart episode, still recovering from open heart surgery I thought "let's let an expert handle this one" (for now).
Hope this helps.
Cheers
DT

I just found a new place.... Exclusive British European Auto in Campbell on Winchester Blvd, just west of Camden/San Thomas.

They charged me a little more than $1000 to replace my convertible top hydraulic hose latch. This is a job many people around here seem to pay around $1600 for. I did use the aftermarket replacement kit, so I did cover the costs. He had never seen it before, but he did a great job installing it. He carefully clipped the old hoses from their mounting brackets and installed using them.

The mechanic is a great guy, loves to talk Jag and has been servicing them for decades. He took meticulous care of my car... and I did visit before the job was done to check out the progress. I was really shocked and appreciative of the care he took with my car.

They don't try to sell you services you don't need, the only downside is they don't have loaners.

Here's their web site:

http://www.ebemotors.com/

This is my XK's "home".
