Hi,

I'm currently trying to work out whether to buy a XK (probably the 5 ltr couple of year old one) or go for the AMG SLK. In terms of costs there isn't that much in it so I am just wondering if anyone here has bought gone from the SLK to the Jag or considered the Merc before going down the Jag route.

I accept that there may be a bias here and I have previously owned Jags (XJ8 and an XJS) so my I am a Jag fan, that said the current AMG version of the SLK does look like a serious bit of kit and my other half prefers it.

I don't commute in my cars (I live in London), so my cars are more just for weekends/fun which means I don't need to worry too much about running costs (within reason).

Thanks

W

My next door neighbour has an older AMG SLK and he just loves my Jag. The SLK is very nice, but he has had problems with sensors failing, which has led to all sorts of problems including not being able to drive above 40, or to shut the roof because the wheel sensor couldn't tell that the car was stationary.

One other minor point is that my neighbour and his wife are slightly on the large side and it has been noted that with the roof down, they look a little like a pair of Weebles. You don't get that in the Jag due to the proportions of the car.

The AMG versions are amazing cars but I like the looks of the Jag so much better. You should check resale value. Jags really drop fast. Maybe the other does also or maybe that doesn't even matter to you.

That's what I was thinking. And an AMG I would compare to XKR if it MUST be compared to XK

I haven't driven one of the newer XKs but I did drive an SLK and it was very, very nice. And the retractable hardtop was awesome, too. My wife preferred the SLK, but I just loved the looks of the older XK8s. I actually think the new SLKs look better than the new XKs, but the old XKs look waaaayyyyy better than the old SLKs. I could see myself being very happy in a newer SLK.

Thanks for the replies - I'm starting to lean more towards the XKR as I do think it is the better looking car and the reviews for it do seem to very positive (not that people are exactly slagging off the SLK). I plan on taking both out over the next couple of weeks to make up my mind.

Thanks for all your help

I leased my daughter an 08 SLK 350 a few years ago and I came away with an unfavorable impression of the car.

Compare with the tops down.
Comparing top down to top down, I put about 20 miles on tonight in the passenger seat of a friend's '02 230 SLK. The wind buffeting with the top down in the SLK was much worse. My 97 XK8 has a much smoother air flow over the wind screen, door windows up or down.

Hope this is useful,
Mike

I've never been a fan of the SLK. The SL is very nice though. If you want a great comparison, try to talk to GhostriderXKR08. He owns both a '08 XKR and a '06 SL65 AMG.

My 2 cents, my wife has owned nothing but MBZ's past 12 years (2 ML's and a E320). Build quality of interior is not as good as my 02 Jag which never ceases to amaze me. Brakes wear much higher rate on her MBZ's than any car I've ever witnessed! <20k miles a year and set of rotors each year and 2 sets of pads. Dealer match up? Both tools! haha

I can't even imagine comparing the two visually. One is sleek and sexy, the other a bit of a boring cheese wedge. A fast cheese wedge, mind you.

I might agree with you about the old SLKs, but the new ones are nice. I wouldn't call this a "cheese wedge".

If it's cheese it's pepper jack! That's a sexy car! So much sleeker and meaner than the original model.

An SLK is a 30 grand motor, popularised by middle aged ladies. Drop in a V8 and put on a badge and it is still the same car, just quicker and more expensive.

Go for a proper car.

I don't think there is an equivalent Jaguar to comprare to SLK , Jaguar XK should be compared to SL , SLK is a cute lil ,small car lol

Last fall I tried a 2007 SLK 280 6 sp manual. I was searching a car for my GF. The looks are great but feeling was terrible. It interior looked cheap and handling was horrible. I prefer the old cat many times or the Cayman...
