I have lost my key to my 1998 jaguar xk8. I am able to get a key sent to me from the dealer as the closest one is stated away. My question is how do I get it programmed without a dealer near?

Some locksmiths can do it but it's hit and miss which.

Er... actually that may be when you have at least one that already works.

I suppose you could buy the factory tool - painful but cheaper than a dealer maybe.

I had a dealer cut me a key but it has not arrived yet. I need to know how to program it myself because the closest dealer us two states away.

You can program a remote fob yourself but you need dealer level diagnostics to program a chipped key.

I believe some independents have older dealer level diagnostics. I would check some local Jag repair garages and check.

Our jaguar mechanic is unsure. We have a small town.

What does the diagnostic do?

It has the function to match the keys (and remotes) to the vehicle transponder module. Without that you'd have a key which fits the ignition lock and turns as normal but then nothing happens.

Would I be able to purchase the machine to do the diagnostic? The dealer said a locksmith with the program could do it, so maybe I can get the program is what I am hoping.
