Default JL Audio 6W3V3 replacement subwoofer

I notice H2OBoy's post on having JL 6W3V3's installed in his XK8 convertible. But, I couldn't tell if this was pretty much a drop in that could be done through the speaker grill, or if it requires modification of the box or the speaker to fit in. Has anyone done this? Can you share the details?

I would go with the Kicker's that several folks have used, but I don't want to have to remove the plastic. It's exactly the kinda of thing I would screw up.

Thanks

Default don't waste your money!

Hello, I installed kickers about a year ago.
The kickers were terrible sound more like rattles of sound than nice smooth bass.
The real problem is that the factory amp just does not have enough power to drive any subwoofer.
Your best bet is new amp either dedicated to the subs or better yet change out speakers in front as well.
Here is a link to a thread I did earlier. explains in detail.

The JL Audio's required an additional spacer due to a bigger magnet and overall depth needed, which you can buy or have made at any audio shop. Most people are going with the Kickers because its easier to install...minus that little trim job they need to do.

I agree with vettegood above, a little mono amp, or two-channel amp bridged using the existing sub high-level input would make a big difference when upgrading. But again, most members just do the speaker swap. Just make sure the box is well sealed, no matter which way you go.
