Default Key problem 2001 XK8

I only got one key when I bought my XK8. I purchased a key from Jaguar for $162.00 plus tax. My next step was to get it programed to my car by a local locksmith. $60.00. I tried the new key in the ignition just to make sure it would turn in the ignition. No luck. The key will slide into the ignition switch but will not turn it. I was not expecting it to start, just turn the switch.
Called Jag they told me to put it on my wire wheel, that was no help.
The keys look the same, anyone else have this problem?

Sure it won't help, but I can tell you I had a key for my '97 XK8 made by an "ordinary" locksmith for about $30, and it works perfectly. There is no chip in the '97 key, so, no need programming. Are you sure there is one in the '01 ? If it does not turn, it might be because of a very little default. I think your local locksmith should be able to fix it.

Why did you expect a programmed key to turn in the ignition but not start the car? There are three steps to a new key...purchase a blank key; have it physically cut to fit the lock; and, if your model year requires it, have it programmed to the car electronics. Are you confusing "program" with "cut"?

Did anybody actually cut the key to match your lock? If you paid either the dealer or locksmith to cut the key, take it back to them. But first, make sure that the original key turns freely - if the steering column lock is applying pressure, it may make the key appear to not work.

Found the problem. The Jaguar dealer cut the key incorrectly. Went back today they cut another key, had it programed and it works great.
