Default LED Turn Signal question?

Has anyone replaced their turn signal bulbs with CANBUS LED's?
If so did it impact the flash rate as with a conventional flasher or did they work normally?

Hey, Rich. Long time; how you been?

I have not installed the LEDs but I'm like 90+ percent sure they would not effect the flash rate (as was true in some older systems). Maybe somebody has used them and can confirm or deny.

They do not affect the actual flash rate because they are controlled by one of the modules, but it WILL cause the arrow and noisemaker in the car do double time.

The system detects this as a bulb out and rather than the "check lights" message you get a double speed tick-tock.

Even the CANBUS ones aren't enough of a load to keep the module happy but it can be resolved by adding some resistors to simulate a dummy load. It doesn't need to be those super duty load resistors, smaller ones can be used.

I just went through some experimentation with LED lights in our cars to see what would work:

Why would you bother with all the trouble it causes when standard indicator bulbs are cheap and will last 10 years+

Because the car is a plaything, and most of all to see if it can be done.

Charlie,

Thanks and you are right on, this is my toy so I am always playing around with it.

So, why not try LED's! Plus they look cool.

Thanks for the information.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I believe that things like led lights and matte paint are currently all-the-rage because they are different. I never especially liked the looks of led lights but I notice these are becoming more and more of a design feature, especially around the headlights, with all manner of intricate curves, lines, and angles (Audi, Mercedes, Lexus). Strikes me more as a gimmick.

Have to agree with you on that one. The whole eyeliner fad doesn't do it for me.

That's a great one! I have been looking for the right adjectives to describe all of the gimmicky finessing that has been going on in the headlight department over the last couple of years with some auto manufacturers. Eyeliner and mascara seem to fit the bill

I can't really take credit, it was my wife. She can't stand that look.
