This morning my 2003 XK8 displayed a low coolant warning for about 20 seconds about 15 seconds after startup

Went away and no further warnings

No apparent leaks and temp gauge reads normal

Coolant reservoir down about 6-8 oz.

I seem to recall the coolant sensors are troublesome.

Do I need worry? Replace the sensor?

Mine goes off about once a year and I always check it and top up with very small amount of coolant to get rid of the alarm. I wonder if the header tank is a bit small for such a big engine. If it keeps coming up and the level isn't dropping it might be worth changing the sensor.

 

If you removed the top from the black header tank and the coolant was not full to the top then you have the classic XK8 issue that your atmospheric expansion tank is empty. In my experience, most XK8's cooling systems have not been filled correctly because garages and owners do not realise that the black coolant tank is not actually the main coolant reservoir.
