Default MAF Sensor - is there a firm answer to this question?

Gus,

My 99 XK8 has thrown rich codes for the past 6 months. I've tried a bunch of things, including replacing the MAF (first thing I did) with a used one off another XK8. Then, I ordered a Cardone MAF from partsgeek.com, and figured since it was new/refurbished, that I could cross that off my list. Since then, I've done the fuel pressure regulator, valve cover gaskets, plugs etc and then just last week replaced the intake and hoses, as my mechanic found a crack which was causing a vacuum leak. All that done, and he drove if for a couple days, but said that it would run rough sometimes and then settle down, then throw the rich code again PO175. He hooked it up to their diagnostics equipment (more than just an OBD scanner) and it was showing MAF readings that were all over the place.

So, my question is, is the only way to know whether you have a good MAF is to pay $350 from the dealer and get it straight from Jaguar, or am I just getting coincidentally unlucky on my last to MAF's? He mentioned that he has always had issues with people trying to bring in the aftermarket MAF's, and that the dealer is the only way to go for those. Years ago I had a couple Mercedes and had a similar issue, then spent $400 for one from the dealer and all problems were resolved. Any thoughts? Thanks -

If it was me, with the scenario you described, I would inspect the connector and wires to the MAF very carefully for damage. If they look OK, I would try some contact cleaner from Radio Shack on each connector half (not the element!) If that did not clear it up, I probably would spring for a Jaguar MAF.
