I have a 2002 xk8 that will not start. When i turn the key, it makes a whirring noise but does not engage the engine.....any ideas please.

 

You need a new starter.

 

Thank you very much Vern. I was confused because when i parked it, it was ok then the following it would not start...... No warning

 

Banging on the starter may free up the gear, but that's only a temporary fix. There are other things that quit suddenly, like fuel pumps.

Are you absolutely sure the engine is not turning? Loss of compression due to what is called bore wash sounds sounds just like the starter not engaging.
Check at the front of the engine for rotation while cranking.
