Manual shifting or not as the case may be
I fear I may be missing something, I have just bought my first XK8 and am a very happy boy.
I do however seem to have one issue, I can select gears down to Drive normally, but I can't shift across to the manual selection side of the J. I'm not sure if it's a fault with the car, or the operator?
Is there some interlock I'm missing? or do I need to look into something a bit more technical?
Thanks in advance
James

Sounds like you're saying you physically can't move the shifter left after it goes down from park? If so, then yes, something's wrong. You should be able to slide all the way through the "J" smoothly, both when the car's standing and moving.
First thing I'd do if I were you is to take the plastic surround around the shifter off (there are plastic clips holding it down, 2 on each side), an old credit card works the best for me. Then take the 4 small screws out to remove the wooden trim underneath. Now you should see the J gate mechanism. See if there's something lodged down there preventing the shifter movement, and if you can clean it, might be as simple as that. If not, you might have a more serious issue.
