Metal thermostat housing v Plastic housing
Gus -- I see that you are the true author of that PDF documentation! Very Well Done!
I especially like the tip about the open end wrench that you customized for this repair.
I have an 01 Vanden Plas that has more front-end room that may not require my having to remove the fan housing, etc.
I think I can just remove the front hoses to gain full access.
I do have a new thermostat from previous work done.
Is it difficult to reassemble into the new housing?
I have no idea what I will be getting "into".
Any other tips?
-- Very grateful to you and your experience!

It is not difficult at all. The thermostat will only go in one way but to be sure for your satisfaction attempt to put it in both ways and you will see. As for the gasket they fit directly into a channel just be sure not to pinch them as you install them and you will be fine.
Jochem I agree. The nav became obsolete <5 yrs after it came out. The R with the mercedes gearbox seems like a winner, athough any of these cars should be desirable 20+ years from now. For the thermostat, make sure the bleed pin is at 12:00. The pin or ball can be removed according to some and that's what I did. Don't know if it makes any difference.
