Default Mileage.

I have seen a 52 reg, thats the year 2002 in UK, 4.2 XK8 advertised for sale. The advert states its a high motorway milage for the year. But it does not state what that mileage is.

So what would the average mileage be for a 2002 car? If I know before I visit then perhaps I can judge better.

Any problems with this particular year & model? Anything I should be looking out for?

Thanks guys.

The '02 UK/'03 US 4.2L is about as good as they got. High mileage? High is in the eye of the beholder. My '02US has 70k and I consider that average. The 4.2L did not have any of the killer cam or transmission problems that plagued the earlier versions.

There is a check list in the sticky above for inspections. I would at least go through the owners manual and test the operation of all the electronics, seat operation and memory, steering wheel tilt/reach, AC operation, dash lights, etc.

Good luck!

Most Insurance Companies in the UK use 12K as the average annual mileage so 120K on a 2002 wouldn't be excessive.

However, many of the first owners of XK8/XKR had them as a second car which would reduce that total figure.

I'd prefer a car that had covered big motorway mileages against one doing short journeys in town and never getting properly warmed up.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am in no rush anyway. Shall take a look at it tomorrow but wont be heart broken if its gone. Ideally id like a metalic blue convertible with sat nav. This is grey silver with Ivory leather. We shall see. )

Frankc ............... each to their own of course, but personally, I would not opt for satnav over the "classic" three-dial layout (even though the clock is the only one which has any connection with the real world.)
The satnav can't be updated, the screen is small by todays' standards, and it is basically obsolete.
Your call, and if you find the perfect car with satnav, then go for it, but I wouldn't make it a "must have" on any account.
Cheers,
David.

+1. Skip the satnav, it is already over 10 years old and not upgreable. Use a smartphone instead. The 3-gauges is a much more classic look.

I have had dozens of customers ditch their satnav to change over to gauges.

RANT STARTS>>>

We haven't had any road repairs done in the UK in more than 10 years let alone any new roads built so the 2002 SatNav is still bang up-to-date over here.

Admittedly, US to UK Nav. to 3-gauge conversion have been in about a 10:1 ratio.

Thanks. It is a good thought about the sat nav as I dont really do much travelling these days. Just want the car for fun. A view I had not taken into account, but then thats why I joined the forum to begin with to get such opinions.

Some questions..... currently in my BMW I can connect my pocket phone to the car via bluetooth. Does a 2002 Jag have this function??

What sort of headlights do these cars have? Xenon? Are they auto leveling? Headlight washers? (Dont want washers just curious) If not xenon are the headlights any good or do you guys opt for HID's? or does that detract from the beauty of the car?

Sorry GGG but you're wrong. ONE new road was built to get people from Dorchester to the Olympic site in Weymouth. I used to do that road regularly, and in my old (now departed) X Type, the sat-nav clearly showed that I was going across fields, streams and the occasional railway line !! I spoke to the Highway's Agency this morning, and they are saving up to build another new road once they have found a place where it will only be used once every 50 years !!

I guess the sat nav data is stored internally on an EPROM then? Seems silly that you cant update it. How about the headlight question thought?

Broadly speaking for UK market, Halogen was fitted up to VIN A30644. This could be standard or with optional power wash. There's always examples where a buyer has specified something from the option list or upgrades have been retrofitted so it's impossible to be absolute about spec.

HID/Xenon from A30645. I think these all have power wash.

Bluetooth on these models is only for the phone and was a very expensive option on all but the Final Series 'S' models where it was standard.

YouTube links often disappear very quickly. Here's the stills from the sequence:

I'm sure I've seen neater head unit faceplate surround options available recently .........

I like the idea of keeping the original bits but changing the innards........... but not seen whole replacements.

Been to see the advertised XK8 today. No intention of buying it. It has obviously not been looked after. There is rust in quite a few places. Chips out of the gear change surround. The external paintwork looks like it has never been polished. Marks. To top it off the colour of the leather is Ivory. Dont mean to upset anyone that has that colour but to me it looks s***. The leather is dry and cracked. etc etc I am sure you get the idea.

Never found out what the mileage was. They just said 'high motorway milage' on the advert. When I got to the forecourt there was no one about so I just looked at it from the outside of the car. Asking price £4800 which I thought was quite good for a 2002 car.

Stupid question but what is the S button for by the gear change? Sport mode? Do all XK8's have cruise control or is that an optional extra from the factory? Same with memory seats, I know they are electric but are they all memory seats or is the memory option an optional extra?

The asking price is on the low side for a 2002 but the condition you describe explains why!

The 'S' button is for Sport mode which delays the upshifts.

Certainly for UK cars, cruise was an option on all but the Final Series models. Same with memory seats.
