My 1st Check Engine Light P1638
Hi Guys, Guess it happens to us all sooner or later. I'm getting a P1368 code. I looked it up:
CAN TCM Token message missing.
Defaut Action: NONE (Engine speed and coolant temperature data missing at Instrument Pack)
Possible Causes:
CAN open circuit - INST to ECM
CAN short circuit fault
INST failure
ECM failure
------------------------------------------
I wanted to bounce this one off you, like I said this will be my 1st time tracking one of these down. Maybe I'll get lucky and one of you will have had experience with it.
From my research on this forum about this code, I will ensure battery is fully charged. I will check all fuses.
There was one thread about a loose connector in the instrument panel area. I couldn't make out exactly where that connector was. Does this ring a bell with anyone?
The code seems to set after about 15-20 minutes of driving. Does that tell you anything? (IOW - Since it doesn't light immediately, can I assume it is an intermittent issue causing the Check Engine Light?)
I'm not looking forward to disassembling the instrument panel in this cold weather, that plus my inexperience with this is why I'm launching this thread. Any thoughts/experience about a hierarchy of what item to look at in which order would sure be great.
Hey are there any negatives associated with me "clearing" the code frequently? I do not have any inspection dates coming up.
Thank you for your thoughts and directions. I'm sure this will help me solve it faster.
John

It could be just a random, spurious code. I would clear it, drive the car, and see if it returns....
I would also check my battery cable connections for tightness and relative cleanliness....

Thanks Jon89,
just took a trip. Turned engine on started, no check engine light (hmmm I thought it would be on until I manually cleared it). 30 miles to store, all ok. 25 miles back no light.
great news, let's see how long that lasts.
