Default My Second-Best Girl Is In The Hospital

She got hit in the rear on Wednesday night. I was driving, following my best girl home after we met for dinner. We both stopped for an oncoming emergency vehicle who had to turn left in front of us and the motorist behind us didn't. Needless to say with physics being what it is, two pieces of mass don't like to share the same space at the same time. The other car was a Suzuki Forenza and it looked a lot worse than the XK8. Sheriff's deputy was amazed that both drivers were properly licensed, had current registration and both had insurance! Both insurance companies are treating me well, I've got a rental for the duration (not a Jag though, go figure) and the very next afternoon the XK8 was in the local Jaguar dealer's collision center getting taken apart to assess all the damage, prepare the estimate and start ordering new parts! Take a look at $4600 in damage (and climbing).
If any of you have some wise advice on this process, I'm all ears.

Ouch! When I saw the pic, I immediately thought "$5000". Hope you are satisfied with the repairs.

Just don't let'em total this car for this little damage. $4600 looks like a too low to me on these repairs.

I've seen a bunch of XK's on EBay Motors with salvage titles and very, very little damage. I've yet to figure out who makes the decisions to deem such a fine car "salvage" for a bumper cover.

There again, import salvage yards are packed with XK8 and XKR junks--providing us with a good supply of used parts to inexpensively keep our rides running.

Thanks for the advice. The car is scheduled for repair with OEM parts, nothing aftermarket. I'm pretty impressed with this dealer and insurance company. The Jag dealer is on the insurance company's approved list. Both have a lifetime guarantee on the workmanship of the repairs, including paint. The dealer also uses new OEM parts even if the insurance company only pays for reconditioned or aftermarket and I've got this in writing.

Not only are the damaged body panels and bumper being replaced, the lid of the boot will be refinished. Some pre-existing dents will disappear as well as the haze in the old clear coat. If they can't do a good blend/match, the whole car will be refinished.

The accident took out the right side of the exhaust system, that will also be replaced with new OEM as it must match the left side which is original.

They will be looking at the frame itself as well to make sure it doesn't need to be straightened.

I'll keep y'all posted as this progresses.

A deformed bumper can mask considerable damage and once the chassis is bent, you can forget about it.

They would write that car off here in the UK, nobody fixes panels anymore they are replaced and a new rear quarter is $1800 alone also a rear valance would be required, just looking at the pic I would of said more like $7500.
What I often tell customers to do is a contract repair, this means the insurance company pays out the maximum it is willing before the car is written off and you pay the difference, the good thing is you dont have to use new parts and normally can fix the car well within budget even some mods can be thrown in if you wished

Just remember. Insurance companies are primarily in the buisness of minimizing payouts. Maybe you should go see your Doctor , and /or your best girl as well. You might find you are treated better on the car.

Been to the 'hospital'. She's all taken apart but we're waiting for a new rear body panel. Seems the last two delivered to the shop were for a later model XK8 although the part number on the wrapping was correct for my '99. Made nice with Tim, the specialist who will do the body work. Haven't met the paint folk yet.

Meanwhile I'm driving rentals primarily from Dodge and Jeep. Had to miss the topless experience of going to Temecula (Southern California wine country) on a driving trip.
