Default Need Help!

Hi.....I have a 2000 Jaguar XK8 with numerous issues; suspension, steering rack, coolant leak, etc......I can handle parts cost for most of the items, and just have my mechanic do the labor. My biggest concern is I need (according to my mechanic) new upper and lower control arms for front right and left sides, as he says the bushings and ball joints are worn out. He won't pop out the old bushings and ball joints and press in new ones, as he's scared of damaging the arm by putting it on a press, especially with regards to the ball joint. I just checked the cost for original Jag upper and lower arms and tie rods...WOW!!!! Over $5000 for all the parts. Sorry, no can do! Anyone with any thoughts as to cheaper alternatives? Don't mind using used parts; just don't want it to be a piece of crap off someone else's XK8 that's also "shot". Thanks to forum members for any advice.

Those are the basic parameters: if you are having someone do the work, are (more expensive) complete assemblies in the net cheaper than the (more labor intensive) alternative of replacing just the failed components? Most of us would say that the control arms are generally strong enough to withstand the work of a press. The challenges for a front end rebuild are the possibly corroded upper arm long bolt and the removal/installation of the joint on the lower arm (awkward angle to press). Otherwise, this is fairly normal suspension work. You probably need to look at your ride height as well to figure out the status of your upper strut mounts (very common failed part) and lower shock joint.

Another plan is to procure used replacement control arms and do the rebuilding "off line" so you can keep using the car, and then swap later.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

I think you need a different mechanic. That excuse is reasonable with the aluminium Lemforder wishbones on the later X150 but a ludicrous suggestion regarding the wishbones on the X100. We have hundreds of members who have successfully completed this as a DIY job.

as one with limited skills mechanically who has done this - you can diy this - just need a 20ton press for the lower ball joint - but it can be done with no damage

I totally agree with Graham. This is not a difficult job. Definitely need to look around for a different mechanic.
