need recommendation for code reader
With the new battery the vehicle theft code is gone but the CAN trans control unit to engine control unit fault is still there and the CAN error is still there. Naturally the monitors that were giving the INC readings are still doing that. I've only got about 100 miles since the new battery so we'll see what happens after a few hundred miles on the monitors.

I'm rooting for you! I've come to the conclusion that probably both of my cats have gone bad. And the engine is possessed. Vacuum leaks are causing rich conditions. I replaced the plastic think and o-ring for the pipe on the RH intake elbow and fixed that leak. It was fine for a couple of days, with LTFT at or just above zero. Yesterday another random vacuum leak started. I'm over this car and it may get donated to charity soon.
I'm up for just about anything! I found that it's useless to donate to charity now. Thanks, IRS! It'll probably have to go to some guy who wants to part it out for it's low-mileage trans and completely rust-free sheet metal.
I'm going to try and get the 2 downstream O2 sensors replaced this weekend and then try and put on a few hundred miles and then see if the monitors reset. I'll try and check for vacuum leaks too while I'm working on it. Might as well use the smoke tester I bought. If I can get the thing to clear the monitors I'll run like crazy over to the smog station to get the certificate issued. At least then I can register it.
I have watched this trial and thought the standard "there, but for the grace of god go I" and shuddered. My '97 XK8 has just over 70k and so far I have yet to encounter any fuel and/or emission codes. However, it sat outside next to an arterial roadway that was salted so one side has the tinworm. The previous owner took meticulous care of it even having the tensioners upgraded and thought being in a carport was good. I'm too new to this marque to give any advice but know a fellow sufferer is rooting for you guys.
Hey there David,
Well at least that's one thing I don't have to worry about here in the People's Republic of California. If we want to be in snow we have to drive to get to it. It one of the few, very few, things that sometimes keeps people in this dumpster fire of a state. (and I mean that figuratively and literally).
