Default new alternator, charging but alt. light on

On my 1998 xk8 I had the original alternator rebuilt. now the battery is getting 14 + volts and the amp meter in dash does not show any movement and the alt. light is on and the not charging message on dash. my question is the thin single wire in the harness? where does it bolt to? I also had to cut the 2 wires that go into the alternator plug and soldered those back on. Thanks guys,

Check the ground wire on the passenger side ,next to the front exhaust, if its green like mine was, its fried.

Clean the big fuses for battery cable in trunk and check your battery cables

took out battery and had load tested, 2 years old and passed all tests. Cleaned all trunk fuses and checked all cables. I didn't have the red light before the rebuild. the alternator quit working on a road trip, when hot, I had it tested at a well known rebuild shop. Failed testing. They rebuilt it, Now it charges at 14.5 volts and amp meter wont move with the red light staying on.

I just had a 2001 XK8 in my shop for a failed ALT and had it rebuilt locally. The rebuild shop called and said that the Jag Denso alt was different and they had to order a special stator or regulator (I forget which) to repair it properly. Nothing they had in stock was correct.

The part had to come from California so it was a few days for parts. I brought another alt to them that I had in my 'pile-o-parts' and they told me that they had the parts to fix that one.

I installed the rebuilt alt and then got the other one repaired later when the parts arrived to keep as a spare rebuild for future use.

You might have gotten an incorrect regulator that did not have the compatible electronics for the car. (just a guess)

Thanks Carman, I was starting to suspect a problem with the rebuild. I may pull alternator back out today. Does anyone know if I have to split the unit to get at the regulator and best place to buy a regulator. Thanks again
