Default NEW NEMBER (introducing myself)

Hello, I'm new to this Forum, and I live in the great state of Idaho. I have several old British cars, including an E-type Jag, and a couple of Daimler Hooper Empresses. All are in good running order, as is my 1999 XK8 which is my major concern here.

The car has 74k miles and is in excellent overall condition (the timing chain tensioners were replaced years ago). It runs well, and I drive it almost every day. I'm more used to working on older cars, but recently did my first (personal) work on this car by replacing the thermostat housing and some related parts. But the car will surely need much more serious preventative maintenance to remain on the road another 22 years!!

The next jobs I have in mind are (1) to change the tranny oil, (2) overhaul the front brakes, and (3) overhaul of the convertible top hydraulics. I'll be searching archives, and probably asking specific questions, but any comments, advice, etc.would be welcome!

Bob F. ("BoiseBob")

Welcome indeed !

driving your car every day is the best preventative maintenance i can think of. More so than many other cars, the XK’s are prone to rapid decline when stored.

I drive my ‘02 XKR rain, snow, or shine. A good workout has many benefits for the driver as well
as the car.

Bob, Welcome, you have a beautiful area to drive in.
Surprised you can drive it that much during the winter, they were brutal in Spokane.
All the mechanical parts will come easy to you as working on all the others you have was good practice. LOL
The transmission oil change is something I've watched a couple of times, really study up on that in the search area at the top of the page.
Great group of folks here and all willing to help.

Default Welcome

Welcome aboard Bob! I have a '99 convertible also. Love it. I have done much mechanical work on mine. Too much to list. Since this is my first XK8, to my surprise I have found it easy to work on. I don't mess with the trans. I had an old time Jag guy change fluid and filter. I did change the diff oil at about your mileage and found that changing it along with the trans help much with the trans shifting much smoother. Do you know what type guides and tensioners were installed years ago. Jag metal or after market. Important! You will not regret joining the Forum. So much info and help.
Stay Well and safe driving

Welcome, sir, to the best place for Jag advice. I'm joining the thread as your list is similar to mine, green shower hydraulics and brakes are on my summer list. I did the tranny fluid last year and posted the event with photos, attached. Maybe you will find it useful.

Welcome to the forum and to your new acquisition. Without this forum I would have never had the courage to purchase Mosby.

I'm not much good with computers, probably won't be posting a photo. Lots on the web.

Daimler was a very early, upscale, Coventry-based company, and Hooper of London was the most prestigious coachbuilder, until sometime after the war. The processional cars and limos of the Royal Family in the '30s - '40s were almost always Daimlers with Hooper bodies. Cars like these were of course custom-built.

The Empress line was actually produced in "production" quantities (about 170 total) for sale to the general (wealthy!) public, about 1951 '54.

So there's your history lesson for the day!!

Default Welcome to the much travelled road

Bob,

Welcome and thanks for the history of the Daimler. Never heard of that model either.

Your “To Do” list is a well travelled road for lots of the Forum members here. I’ve done those jobs too, so any problems let us know and one of us will chime in. This friendly forum has helped me many times, even when I’m stuck and scratching my head in the middle of a job.

If you need some hard to find little bit, don’t be shy to ask as many of us have stuff in infamous bottomless parts bins which we share. Others have helped me numerous times, and I’ve tried to “pay it forward.”
