Question New Parts or Used Your Opinion.

Just started to replace damaged drivers side fog lamp. Went online checking the breaker yards thinking i could get a great deal on a used lamp. I was quoted prices ranging from $60 to $90 plus shipping for a part that was 16 years old. I was not happy so i started searching again and to my surprise i found brand new jaguar part with bulb for $125 and free shipping . Any one else had this happen to them, I know these guys have to make money but that seems a bit greedy.

To me it seems that the used prices are dictated by how difficult it is to get the parts new. I've found recently that a few second hand parts have been more expensive than the new part cost but the new parts had a very uncertain lead time with up to 6 months quoted.

If the fog light is available new fairly soon at $125 then I would get that rather than pay $90 for an old used part.

I always check the dealer price on a part first. That way I know if I'm getting a better deal elsewhere on new parts. It also helps to assess new or old choice.

As you've found, used isn't always the best option.

Yep, start with the dealership then work your way down. One advantage of this method is that my local dealership parts guys learned that if they wanted my business, they had to begin discounting. During the past several years they have become much more competitive (for me, anyway) and as a result I buy from them more often than I did before. I'm glad they finally realized their pricing was unrealistic and decided to change their tune. I had told the general manager in no uncertain terms on multiple occasions that they were simply not competitive and folks like me were going elsewhere for their OEM parts....
