Default Non-OEM filters and startup clatter

So I've heard it said a few times that if you go to jiffy lube they will put on a filter that doesn't have a little valve/bypass in it. Are the OEM filters actually different? I ordered one on eBay for 22$ and haven't put it in yet. I've got at least another 2000 miles on the oil that's in there now.

I changed my sec. tensioners a while back but the is a little noise on startup. Will this new OEM filter make a difference?

It can't hurt. I only use OEM filters just for that reason. $22 vs. ~$15 for the aftermarket? $7 is a very cheap bit of insurance against thousands of dollars worth of engine work (or replacement).

Many forum members use the OEM equivalents (Mann?), just make sure it has the check valve.

If the rattle lasts more than 3 or 4 seconds, it bears checking out. Could be a bigger issue. Are the primary tensioners original? Usually not an issue, but they do begin to rattle before they go, unlike the secondary tensioners which just go out with no warning.

My rattle is almost exclusively while the starter runs, maybe it's one second after. Can't remember at the moment.

my rattle is 2 seconds after engine firing in cold startup; Probably actuators in the gearbox jumping into action, but not sure. Everything is new, so I don't worry

Actuators in the gearbox? I don't think so, but there are many things I don't know about these cars.

Fair challenge; Better word would have been 'solenoid' ; And gearbox should read automatc transmission. Attached the parts list of the ZF tranny, just because I came across it..

Learning all the time too...

I experience a light tapping sound on startup which disappears in a few seconds on my '03 XKR. I don`t like it but I don`t worry a lot about it either.

I use K&N filters. The best on the market in my opinion. You can get them straight from K&N for about $10.99

I use K&N filters on my motorcycle. I think I`ll try one on the Jag on next oil change and see if it makes a difference re the initial light clatter on startup.

Those interested in researching the finer points of oil filters might wanna take a peek at the "Baldwin" brand. I came across Baldwin filters quite by accident. They're apparently have a great reputation.

I ordered some (for a non-Jaguar application) and, FWIW, they seem to be very stout and heavy....which might be totally insignificant. OTOH it might suggest more filtering media inside.

Anyhow, just thought I'd throw it out there.....

Cheers
DD
