Norma Connection- Heater Hose
My octopus hose on my 2001 Xk8 is leaking at the Norma connection on the passenger side where it connects to the aluminum tube running to the rear of the engine below the intake manifold. Will a splice work on this area? It's before the hose splits into multiple destinations. I am trying to avoid a complete hose assembly installation.
On my 2000 I had a coolant leak in that area and assumed time to replace the spider octopus hose. My leak was actually at the throttle body so while in there I replaced the valley hoses, thermostat tower and fixed the TB leak. I was going to do the octopus hose but it was not leaking so I saved it for a later day. However I noticed that a previous owner did have a leak on the passenger side Norma and had just cut it off and put a jubille clamp on it. This solution has held with no problems.
I'd say use good judgement. It is of course possible to repair it, but, if original, this thing is 20 years old, and that particular section sits on top of the converter and sees a lot of heat once the car stops moving. No need to remind you that if the repair fails, you are now stranded wherever, whenever it happens. From memory, some have reported that with the bending required to reach the o-ring, the hose ripped apart in their hand due to age. Your car, your choice of course, but if it was me, I would line up for a replacement. FWIW, I do not believe this particular leak turns catastrophic quickly, so you may have some time to place an order and block the time for the replacement.
FWIW, having dealt with heater hoses in the same general area, a turkey baster can empty out a lot of coolant from the expansion tank quite cleanly. Once you remove the tank, you can use the baster even further to empty out even more coolant for this work. That coolant can be saved and reused afterwards if you want.
Best of luck, keep us posted.
