O2 sensor
Hi all
haven't posted in some time, I’m still running, so is my jag. However have to remove the right side O2 sensor , looks like fun to get too. purchased the slotted extension socket.
Have a code P1646 and short term fuel trims stay open. Could be something other than the sensor, but if past history with this model holds true, it’s been the sensors that fail from age and not the item they monitor. Wish they had come up with somewhere else to put that damm octopus hose. Anybody else replaced this sensor recently? Tips welcome
Cheers.

I've replaced a few of these over the years but, thankfully, not the ones on my XK8.
My only tip would be that if the sensor doesn't undo with a reasonable amount of force, then try and have a gas torch or induction heater on standby and also a rattle gun. I usually get sensor boss to dull red heat and that always seems to do the trick, but getting access can be an issue.

My advice, unplug and tie a string to the plug and pull it down the fire wall between all the wires. Sure helps getting it back up there in place.
Oh, a big blanket to lay across the top of the engine.

I used a crows-foot O2 socket and a long breaker bar to break the sensor loose, then a long ratchet to loosen it enough to be removed by hand. It wasn't as bad a job as I had anticipated.
get a wobble socket and some extensions and you can get a breaker bar on it going right through the AC drains on the dashboard. there's one on each side. see photos further down this thread where I did this. +1 on the tip to tie a string to the old connector so you can pull them through up behind the engine when you get the new ones in.
