Compass Calibration failed
After removing the Dome light unit and unplugging the 2 associated harness plugs and subsequently reinstalling it all, I noticed that the mirror compass had reset itself to the "C" calibrate mode.
i checked that the deviation zone selected was correct and then drove in slow circles for a few minutes. No joy on the calibration process.
Regardless of tactic to restart the compass it always returns to "C".
I have tried, ignition sw cycle, deviation zone change, mirror compass sw cycle, drive in opposite direction circles. Still no joy.
The compass feature functioned properly before the Dome light unit R/R.
Any insight?

I've tried to reset the calibration of my rear view mirror compass. All I get now is "C" followed by numbers 1-15, presumably calibration zones (for the USA?) How do I recalibrate the compass for the UK (North east?)please
My 2004 XK8 mirror compass appears to have a mind of its own. The recalibration process sometimes takes 4 circles to complete and sometimes 30 circles won't do it. Then, once it is set it can hiccup and show a direction 30* or 90* or 180* off, without any apparent reason.
Luckily, I live on an island where it takes some real effort to get lost.

Thank you for your help. I've managed to get a direction showing on the compass, but it is approx 180deg out. Despite many journeys, it hasn't reset itself. I suspect the problem is that the compass/mirror was not correctly reinstalled after the windscreen was removed for re-upholstering. I can feel something very loose at the front of the mirror against the windscreen. Can the mirror be removed without removing the windscreen, and if so, where do I go from there?
I am about to the same thing myself... My mirrorcompass was showing C after i had messed about with regluing the iron foot on the windsheild.. tried to hold it in place with a strong magnet from the outside.. after that the compass went totally nuts... managed to calibrate it, but its off by 90 degrees... after realising what i actually did, i had to slap myself...
The magnet field on earth is only a few microtesla... that is increadibly weak.. so the compass will align itself with the strongest magnetic field nearby, witch in my case now are the damn iron foot to the mirror..
In my case its a matter of buying a "degausser" or an de-magnifyer and de-magnetize anything that are made of iron in the vincinity of the mirror and hop for the best.. Im planning to buy one of those things that where commonly used to de-magnetise the heads on tapedecks...
If you have been welding on the car there is also a chance, even though minor, that something has got magnetized..

How do I get the mirror off the windscreen, so I can see what's loose or incorrectly set up inside it? The very lightweight part which is very loose and rattling inside the mirror does not appear to affect the compass. It isn't heavy enough to be iron.
