Official ZF video 5HP24 fluid change
The URL below is the link to ZF's official video of the fluid change procedure of the XK8 5 speed transmission. NOTE: it is nothing like the real world video by Reverend Sam, which I recommend. However, I am posting it because it contains two very good pieces of information:
1) fluid capacity: 5-6 liters when changing.
2) recommendation that fluid be changed every 8 years regardless of mileage. This is in contrast to the 'lifetime' use by Jaguar. This means that EVERY 1st gen XK8 needs their fluid changed if not done already.
Oh, and the ZF5 fluid is expensive : $18/liter on Amazon x 6 = $108 + $80 for gasket/filter. However, if you go to here : http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=home the price drops to about $15/liter for ZF Lifeguard5 if you buy a case of 6 liters. Filter/gasket kit is $61
Also, there are apparently two versions of our transmission : 5HP24 & 5HP24A. They use a different filter/gasket kit. The 5HP24A is for 4x4 autos. Jaguars use the 5HP24. The transmission in the video appears to be the 5HP24 model.
If you add the after market filler tube you're looking at $300.
If you get the filler tube I think you should install it first, before doing the fluid change. But Reverend Sam would be the guy to ask.
Anyone ever drill a drain hole in the torque converter, tapped some threads then plugged it with a small aluminum bolt? I've seen this done on old THM 350s but not the ZF.
