Oil and filter recommendations
#2
If you choose to go with an alternative to the Jaguar OE oil filter, make sure it has a non-return valve. This prevents oil draining back into the oil pan as the vehicle stands. Without it, the engine starts with a partially empty filter which must fill again before oil circulates properly. Apart from making a rattling noise for a few seconds, this causes unnecessary wear.
Opening up an engine inevitably gets some material such as old sealant and other particles dislodged. I would do the oil change after the tensioner work is completed and the engine run to give any loose particles a chance to be trapped in the filter.
Best oil - I'll leave that one to the usual suspects to fight over!

This is from the US 2000MY Vehicle Care Handbook. If you don't have a copy, you can download it (and the rest of the Vehicle Document Set) for your model from:

They are in PDF format.

It's miniscule and matters only for their CAFE rating. By saying this they qualify to do all their fuel economy testing with 5W30. It doesn't mean the engineers aren't muttering under their breath the whole time.
Notice how it doesn't say anywhere on the page "for best engine protection".

Perfect, thanks for clearing that up. I value protection over economy even though I'm pretty damn broke. Ambient temperatures hover between the 90s on the hot end and the mid 60s on the low end during the year here. I rarely ever see temps above or near 100.
Should I go with 5W-40 or with 0W-40?

IMHO no reason for the 0-40 since you're not going to see too many snowstorms there. You could easily do with a 10-40 or even a single weight 30 if available. From what I understand from oil forums the bigger the viscosity spread the less robust the oil. As everyone else says, pick a name brand on sale and don't sweat it.

Is use the Motorcraft FL-2021 oil filter. It's made by/for Ford, as is your engine block. I compared a Jaguar OEM filter vs one of these and they look 100% identical (excepting the paint job of course).
