Default Oil and filter recommendations

As soon as I'm done with the tensioners, I am going to be changing my oil and filter. Recommendations?

Also, should I change the oil before or after I start the car after the new tensioners change?

If you choose to go with an alternative to the Jaguar OE oil filter, make sure it has a non-return valve. This prevents oil draining back into the oil pan as the vehicle stands. Without it, the engine starts with a partially empty filter which must fill again before oil circulates properly. Apart from making a rattling noise for a few seconds, this causes unnecessary wear.

Opening up an engine inevitably gets some material such as old sealant and other particles dislodged. I would do the oil change after the tensioner work is completed and the engine run to give any loose particles a chance to be trapped in the filter.

Best oil - I'll leave that one to the usual suspects to fight over!

Lol, ok. So what viscosity should I be looking for? I'm not sure of what the car has right now.

Last time I used, 5W/30 Castrol Magnatec Fully synthetic A1, it met the specs in the handbook and was on offer at my local parts store.

Viscosity requirement depends on ambient temperature in your location:

This is from the US 2000MY Vehicle Care Handbook. If you don't have a copy, you can download it (and the rest of the Vehicle Document Set) for your model from:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-2003-a-67827/

They are in PDF format.

Graham has it.

As for brand name or type (synthetic or dino), use whatever makes you happiest. The car couldn't care less.

Ambient temps here hover between the 70s and the 90s, so according to Graham's chart, 5W-40 seems to be what I should have in my car.

I'm wondering, it says 5W-30 for best fuel economy, is the difference really that much?

The higher viscosity provided by the 5W-40 will help with the higher ambient temps. the 5W-30 is just a bit thinner at temp and easier to circulate thus less engine drag.

Protection>Economy in my book.

Betcha it's impossible to measure outside of a lab and dyno environment.

It's miniscule and matters only for their CAFE rating. By saying this they qualify to do all their fuel economy testing with 5W30. It doesn't mean the engineers aren't muttering under their breath the whole time.

Notice how it doesn't say anywhere on the page "for best engine protection".

Perfect, thanks for clearing that up. I value protection over economy even though I'm pretty damn broke. Ambient temperatures hover between the 90s on the hot end and the mid 60s on the low end during the year here. I rarely ever see temps above or near 100.

Should I go with 5W-40 or with 0W-40?

IMHO no reason for the 0-40 since you're not going to see too many snowstorms there. You could easily do with a 10-40 or even a single weight 30 if available. From what I understand from oil forums the bigger the viscosity spread the less robust the oil. As everyone else says, pick a name brand on sale and don't sweat it.

Is use the Motorcraft FL-2021 oil filter. It's made by/for Ford, as is your engine block. I compared a Jaguar OEM filter vs one of these and they look 100% identical (excepting the paint job of course).

More details here:

Easily done!

In your almost ideal climate, a strong contender in conventional oil would be the Shell Rotella 15W40. Very economical in the large jugs. It meets spec for your vehicle and has a very good reputation.

I bought a Purolator PureOne and used my grandpa's Castrol Syntec 10W-40. He had a spare gallon lying around. The Purolator features the Anti-drainback valve and 99% filtration.

The best oil ever? The one that comes in the funny shaped plastic liquid keeper thingie with the top part that unscrews. Once you get that silver stuff off the top opening thingy, that's the stuff inside you want to use! Best stuff ever!
