Default Oil Filters

So, I'm interested in your opinions on oil filters. I have been paying $18.95 (full retail) for each Jaguar brand oil filter at the local dealer's parts counter and feel taken each time.

The local parts store had a special - 5 quarts of Castrol and either a Fram or Purolator oil filter for $14.99. I bought 20 quarts and ended up with 2 Fram and 2 Purolator filters, but I am a little leery of using them. Any thoughts?

Tony

My opinion is that either/both of your name brand filters meet or exceed the Jaguar filter specs.

What will be of more controversy in this post is the use of the 'dino' oil you purchased vs. synthetic. The Jaguar spec only calls for API SJ without regard to synthetic or not but there are strong feelings toward synthetic . . . and toward natural oils.

My reading of oil testing labs comments is that both offer adequate protection when changed at proper intervals. Then there is the question of what is the proper interval.

Thought you had a simple question didn't you.

Gee Tom, I only see that sort of drivel on other sites. I hope you're not going to import it here.

Either filter is fine.

I take it, then, that you have no interest in discussing why an oil with .000143567% ash content is perfect, but only an idiot would use an oil with .000143577% ash content ?

:-) :-)

Cheers

You guys are a riot. After reading some more about the Fram filters, I'm scared to use them. I'm glad to hear Jag Tech Ohio said that either would be fine, though. I just feel really taken at $18.95 retail. I had read a while back that many Britons would stock up on NAPA Gold oil filters when they travelled to the US. Just food for thought.

As for the dino vs. synthetic debate......wow......that's a never ending conversation. I will tell you that my Jag tech and I finally decided with a Nikasil engine to use dino Castrol and change the oil every 2500 miles. That's what the XK gets, but our other cars get different oils and intervals.

Wix makes NAPA filters. Part numbers are almost identical.
