Question Is oil, just oil?

Bought a 2006 XK8 and oil change is around the corner. The dealer we bought it from had done the 30K service and used Castrol oil, as recommended by Jag.

Guy at Jiffy Lube says better to stick with same oil as in past.

Question is, why? Oil is pretty much oil, ain't it?

Thanks

I didn't see fire suit listed in your signature, but you might want to put one on. This topic has been known to start the flaming.

The answer to your question is you can mix oils. Even synthetic and regular, but I personally don't recommend the latter.

If you are just topping up the level, use what you want. Stay with Castrol (a good brand) to be safe, especially since 1 quart isn't going to break the bank.

If you are changing the oil, then it is personal preference. I use high mileage synthetic due to having a high mileage engine (duh), high summer temperatures and my driving is primarily urban.

Any oil is better than no oil.

I will not get into the oil discussion, but will comment on oil change services. On a couple of forums there have been posts about the quick change places being so quick that filters and oil didn't really get changed. So it would be a good idea to check the dipstick to make sure the oil is new and at the proper level, and ask to see the old filter.

First things first......

Never Never Never use Jiffy Lube. There are horror stories a mile long about that place.

Find a real mechanic. Most of what a Jaguar needs can be handled by a qualified indy shop.

As far as oil IMHO if you are changing every 3k then any name brand at the proper weight is fine.

The filter is more important.

Default Oil

I am in total agreement with Lorwood. An aside; back in the day I was going to college on the G.I. Bill, and broke most of the time. I was driving a $hitbox VW bug that leaked and burned a lot of oil. I would put used aircraft oil into it, as that oil only had 25 hours on it. It used one or two quarts a week.Drove it like that until I junked the car a year later.

If you follow the recommendations of the manufacturer, or, perhaps change your oil a little sooner than recommended, you will be fine.

As has been said before on this subject, very few of the problems with these cars are related to poor lubrication.

Put some quality oil in it and keep it to the level that is should be and then change it as per the recommended frequency and you should have no "oil change related" problems.

I choose to use Mobile 1 Synthetic, and I change it once a year, because I only put about 3000 miles a year on my car.

Others are perfectly fine with dino oil, and as long as it is kept fresh it should be perfectly fine as well.
