Default Oil pressure gauge and sender unit.

Hello gents, just wondering if it was possible to fit a universal 12v oil sender unit with a guage to our engines replace the oe one? I remember fitting one to a kit car I built in the early 80, s it was a veglia one on a ford pinto 1600cc motor, just screwed the sender unit on and ran a wire to the guage, it was easy. I know the oe gauge is not reliable so is it not possible to exchange the sender unit with a universal one and replace the gauge? I am sure it has been discussed before but I cannot find any ref to it, just the costly conversion. Any link to why it cannot be done would be appreciated for educational purposes, my curiosity is needing to be satisfied.
Many thanks,
ArtyH

I am sure it is possible, but the better fix is to see forum member whitexkr's website. TheJagWrangler - Home - About Us

The RealGauge is the way to go. Turns your oil and water gauges into actual gauges. I love mine and highly recommend the product. Easy to install and inexpensive. A plus is that it retains the factory look.

The three gauge unit in the center console is essentially a one-piece instrument, so it is not straightforward to just remove one gauge. You could add the universal unit at another location though. If you do, you will need to adapt the M10.25 threads that the existing oil pressure switch plugs into. I sell these adapters on my website. It also can be done with banjo bolt terminated hoses with the proper fitting sizes which can be found on ebay.

When you refer to the 'costly conversion' do you mean 'RealGauge'? If you do, send me a message. I am willing to work with you to make it more affordable if the price is an issue.

Hi WhiteXKR, in my post I was in no way trying to deprive you of any business as I believe your conversion is the best way to read the oil pressure, no question.
However for the U.K members to import the realgauge its quite expensive, and for me who will only cover about 1k miles per year, its not really worth it. That's why I asked, its a question I had to find an answer for to suit my personal situation. You are very kind to offer solutions to funding the project but I could not justify the expense as yet as there are so many things to check having just put the car to bed after purchase, so who knows what tasks need to be undertaken in the next few months. First I need to change the tensioners and check the gearbox after it had a filter and oil change, after that I will see how the finances go.
A heart felt thank you for the kind offer re ways to the purchase of the realgauge, a true testimony of how great this forum is!
Thanks again,
ArtyH

Spent quite a bit of time searching for an M10.25 thread before finding this post!

Sorry about that...it is probably entirely my fault...I had that typo in a couple of places. Correct size is M10x1.25 as stated.

You will find that fittings in that size, outside of brake fittings, are as rare as hen's teeth.

But, plugging in

M10x1.25 turbo

into ebay will get you some likely candidates.

The most useful are the turbo oiling lines which would permit
remote mounting of senders from a tee-block at the far end.

XJ owners have no other choice since we do not have an
existing gauge to work with.

I still need to see if unplugging the stock oil pressure switch
causes any problems such as engine complete engine shutdown.
I still plan to run an indicator light though. But with a more
useful 15 psi indication level. Stock is around 7 psi.

I also still offer a one-piece T-adapter kit as another alternative to mounting a standard 1/8" NPT oil pressure sensor plus the factory oil pressure switch.

See http://www.thejagwrangler.com/jaguar...e-adapter.html

I have purchased a spare oil pressure switch for a few bucks with the M10 1.25 thread which I plan to butcher and the weld on a nut which will fit the thread for my gauge to create a suitable adaptor.

Please report back on whether having the original oil pressure sender/switch disabled has
any negative effects.

Just tried it, the engine runs fine, oil pressure gauge reads zero and red indicator is lit as would be expected. No engine light surprisingly.
