Default Opinions on transmisson please

Recently purchased 1999 xk8. I've replaced upper tensioners, water pump, and thermostat. Reduced voltage to rag top motor and my rebuilt rear view mirror is on its way. You guys are costing me a lot of money!.. ...[ only kidding!] You're actually saving me money and a lot of future headaches. How about the transmisson? My jag has only 17,000 miles but it's 12 years old. Is that equal to say 60,000 miles and ready for the fluid to be changed? .....So far no problem with it. Opinions would be appreciated.....As always ....Thanks Mick99

I have 2 chains of thought here:

1.Its very low mileage so fluid and filter should hopefully be clean
2.The fluid is 12 years old might be worth changing for peace of mind but if it aint lurching or leaking might be okay

Opinion only...I don't think the fluid goes bad in a sealed container, so you're probably good to go with the old fluid. Other guys here probably can argue the other way. If you're ambitious and would like to cover all the bases, then change it. Plenty of discussion on the actual changing and which fluid to use. Again, I didn't research, but maybe there's a manufacturer recommendation as to miles/time on the fluid. Don't go by Jag, they say forever.

Congrats Mick99. What color is your new baby?

You'll get much better tech responses from others but I really feel like you'd be much better served living with the current transmission if it's working properly. From all I've heard and read it's not true that all of those transmissions are short lived. We don't have crystal ***** but what if you want to sell this one and get a different one a few years or so from now? It would just be a shame to put that kind of coin in to the car when it simply may not be necessary.

Cheers -Terrapin

Terrapin,....saw your thread on colors. My "baby" is topaz. Topaz is light beige with a golden hue. Its dark enough for its curves to easily be seen in the brightness of the day and yet not so dark that its lines are lost in its own density. It's masculine, but also cheerful! The car was sitting in the showroom of a Lexus dealer and by far had the most character of any of the cars there!!...Thanks for your input by the way!

The ZF repair manual for the 5HP 24 states that the fluid should be renewed after 10 Years

When all else fails, read the directions. Thanks Bob.

Just bought another 'A'drum for another 5HP 24 repair. The ZF repair guide is good info and they are available on eBay and other sources.

I would change every fluid and filter in it....engine oil and filter, diff, fuel filter, power steering, tranny oil and filter, brakes and coolant. Best money you will ever spend on the car and you will have a PM start point you can count on.

I just had the tranny fluid and filter changed in the 06XKR with 50K. It was very dirty and needed changing, I thought I was doing it early as ZF suggests 60K changes on the 6 speeds! I am also getting ready to change the supercharger oil and fuel filter just to keep up with things.

TOTALLY agree with that statement, as I do this with any car I buy.

Curious as to how you know it was very dirty?

I changed mine last week on a 5 speed. The fluid was dark with a very fine "gritty" paste on the bottom of the pan. Maybe a teaspoon of this thick fluid. Most of it was stuck to the magnets on the oil pan.

The tech told me this. Since he sees many trannies, he should have a wide frame of reference. I know the fluid is basically clear, so it's easy to spot dirty.

^ this.

Even though I knew that my car did receive it's 30k service, I bought it at 31k and replaced all fluids. That way I know for certain that everything was done and when the next interval should be.
