Output Shaft Bearings
I am now 99% sure that my search for the noise is related to the output shaft bearings. The play in the back wheels correspond to JTIS info regarding the bearings, and the noise is very much inline with what other people report as failing output shaft bearings.
I have been looking around in Jaguar Parts PDF (not in the list) and a bit of browsing, but cannot find a good source for these bearings. Does anyone know of a good (european) supplier for an output shaft bearing kit?

I can't help with a kit but I do have access to a number of European bearing and oil seal manufacturers in the (probably remote) event Jaguar used standard metric or Imperial sizes in the back axle.

Would for sure be nice, the part number for the bearing is JLM20337, and it looks to be pretty expensive - 200 EUR each. Sounds like a lot for this kind of bearing?
If you can get me dimensions + type (ball/roller/taper roller etc) I'll get you a price.

I'll see if I can locate the dimensions somewhere. Some googling does not reveal too much, however. Perhaps someone in our forums has a clue? Very friendly of you to help out
Looks like the Timken TMLM503349A could be a replacement. At $18, sounds scaringly cheap compared to the OEM part. Should I be scared?

If you get a genuine Timken it will be as good as the original.

There are 2 axle bearings that hold the diff in the housing, with part JLM20336 (please check though), but for these you need to take out the diff itself.
The 2 other ones (differential shaft bearings) which I think you are looking for and that can be changed insitu (and could cause end play for instance), are JLM20337, and much more expensive even.
The timken you mentioned look like the JLM20336.

If anyone has changed their output shaft bearings, or have measurements or bearing numbers of the original ones, it would be very helpful. Right now it is a bit of a stab in the dark finding the correct part.
To me, it looks like these should be the correct part numbers:
Inner bearing: Timken SET45 = OEM JLM20336
Outer bearing: Timken LM503349A = OEM JLM20337

They are showing 25523 for the diff bearing. This checks with Autozone and Summit Racing lookups for the 2002 XKR.

The 25523 is just the race however, not the bearing itself. AFAIK the LM503349A should be the bearing corresponding to this race.
The inners (JLM20336) are very different from the shaft bearings (JLM20337), and the timken ones shown here don't look the same to the shaft bearings.
All I have with regards to measurents for the JLM20337 are an od of 72mm and a height of 29mm.

It turned out that it was NOT the output shaft bearings after all. It was the pinion bearing of the diff. Unfortunately there are not many mechanic's around Europe who do a pinion bearing replacement on a diff, so I ended up getting a used diff with 35k miles on it:
