Default Part identification problem

In a previous post while discussing mistakes, i mentioned that i'd crushed a multiplug that i thought connected to the thermostat housing.

But it doesn't.

It was the grey (female) end of the sensor switch in the photo, which i'd removed from the sensor at the time, and had come to rest on the thermostat housing cap, so that when i shut the bonnet . . .splat.

Could anyone be kind enough to tell me what type and size of grey female plug i should be looking to buy to replace the smashed bit?
Obviously it has to be a match for the male end attached to the sensor, which i think is an air temperature sensor.

As it's part of the harness, Jaguar in the UK don't supply the connector separately.

To save yourself a lot of trouble, contact one of the specialist UK Jaguar breakers for a used one with about 6 inches of leads attached. You can then easily splice it to the existing harness after cutting off the damaged one.

That would be a coolant temperature sensor.

In addition to Graham's suggestion, you can find the manufacturer and type for most connectors in the electrical diagrams.

Is there only one coolant temperature sensor plums?

If so at least they should know what bit i'm talking about when i say i want the grey female end of it.

I'll give some breakers a try GGG. but the plug without the sensor is not worth much, so they might not bother to sell and send me one.

I had similar experiences chasing a front ABS harness which are worth considerably more..

I took a pic of the good end, i've taped up the wires to avoid shorting, but i'm pretty sure they are spade ended and in perfect condition.

Should be just the one. Of course you can always tell them to sell you the sensor with a six inch pigtail. That might sound more sensible to them.

An alternative is to just push the wires back on and fill the whole cavity in the remaining plastic bit with silicone. Make sure it all works before applying the silicone

No shame in a well executed bodge

Absolutely

And i might end up having to, but i'll give it a shot at doing it right first.

Is the silicone you mention that silicone sealant that dries like rubber?

I've had a bit of a time with that stuff already, it took me hours to scrape it off the cam covers and bolts.
And i think my crank seal was glued on, i had to cut and scrape that off the crank seal aperture with a stanley blade, brake parts cleaner and sandpaper.

A little pic to show the crank seal removal.

Not exactly a one piece removal job.

Is this normal?

Yes. RTV silicone sealant, or even 5 minute epoxy.

If you run a band of masking tape around the socket it helps to smooth things out.

If you take out the sensor to do this and orient it vertically first, it will look just like a factory potted seal. But, then you would have to snip the wires and solder back together once the sensor is back in the car.

The RTV is stiff enough so that you can do it in place. The trick is to wrap some tape around the wires close to the connector, apply RTV, smooth result with *wet* finger, then pull tape off to get a clean edge. Let cure for 24 hours.

Just like doing bathroom tile.

You've got to work on those negotiating skills!

I continually work up a list of small fixings/trim items that need replacing.

When I need a reasonably priced used spare from a breaker, I add these items from the list. Usually the small items are included free of charge because they are of minimal value to the breaker.

I've just been fishing on the net (again) for one of these connectors, and i found this at a place where i could copy a picture of it.

I don't know if this is the right one, but i might try to email the place some pics and see if they can tell me whether or not it's a match.

Worth a shot before i resort to silicone.
