Default plastic cover in the engine - decorative or functional?

Those parts that cover the coils, have Jaguar stamped on and make the engine look cool. Mine broke off, just got brittle over time. Are they decorative or functional?

I'm beginning to think they just help hold in moisture along with the rectangular covers over the coils. Just look at how rusty the back of the coils get.

If they were purely cosmetic, they wouldn't have rubber seals ..........

On the 4.2L they don't have seals... cost cutting I'd guess.
