Default Plastic part near back of engine compartment

I recently purchased a 1999 XK8 which hasn’t been started in a few years, but someone loved her at some point. The timing chain tensioners have been upgraded to the metal version as has the thermostat housing.

It’s had 8 owners, which I realize is a red flag, but I decided to buy it and bring it back to life. One of the issues I’m facing is I’m not sure what some things should look like.

I’ve attached pictures of the plastic piece near the bulkhead between the wiper blades. It is in two pieces, but looks cleanly cut so I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be two pieces or if it’s broken.

Also, the 4 “nut-certs” going through the plastic have studs coming out the other side with nothing attached to them. Is there supposed to be some device connecting the two halves?

It’s a 2 piece firewall/cowl. It’s supposed to be that way. Maybe some fasteners are needed to cinch it up closer to the metal firewall. The only other thing I see missing is the actual cowl panel that goes on the top to hide all that.

My 97 is broken similarly. It’s definitely supposed to be one piece. I’m guessing somebody leaned on it with a hand while reaching across the engine bay. You may want to seal the gap because it’s letting some engine bay air into your HVAC intake. Look for firewall or plenum “closing plate”. Various part numbers and supercessions. And some have 1 stud for holding gizmos instead of 4. Original early part was GJA8874BF convert/GJA8874AF coupe
If memory serves, my 97 has a couple electronic boxes that look engine management-y that attach to those 4 studs on the engine bay side but that may be an AJ26 thing

I have since found a parts diagram and agree with you it’s supposed to be one piece. I can also see how easy it would be to break it while leaning on it to access another part. Ive found used ones on ebay for $50 or so.

Thank you for the advice! So many times on this car, Im not sure what I am looking at is the correct piece. One of the previous owners put an S Type valve cover on the driver’s side. Took me ages to figure out why one side had two bolt holes for the coils and the other side only had one!
