Possible new owner?
Thinking about a 2005 XK8 on Craigslist. Owner claims it is a "carbon fiber r model". What does that mean to me? Anyways...only 40k miles....what is a good price to pay, and what should I look for?

Jaguar produced a number of limited edition series of the XK8/XKR. The letter 'R' indicates supercharged.
Initially the 'Carbon Fibre' edition was marketed in the UK in late 2004 and restricted to 100 units. Later a further 200 were produced for the US to commemorate the Trans-Am racing successes and available as either Coupe or Convertible.
The cars had almost all available options included and buyers could choose any paint and trim colours from the Jaguar range. In keeping with the model name, they all came with carbon fibre dashboard instead of the usual veneer.
I'll leave it to US members to comment on price as this is very different to the price we would pay in the UK.

That's a very good price, at least it would be in the Dallas area. One feature that the Victory model had was bluetooth support for phones which as far as I know, is not available any other way. you may miss all the nice wood.

Saw one of these on the showroom floor in OKC when they were introduced. Beautiful, fast car, but it was hard for me not seeing any of that classic and gorgeous burl walnut in the interior... That part just didn't say "Jaguar" to me. However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and, given what sounds like limited production numbers, might well be worth it.
Is it the one in Wesley Chapel? That guy has been trying to sell it for a couple years now. He started at $22K and has been steadily lowering price ever since.
It is about 10 miles from me. I could go take a close look if you are serious about it.

2003 and up if you want to get away from the tensioner issues.
Best of luck with him

I have a 2005 Carbon Fibre Edition, which is often confused with the Victory Edition (2006?). I think the only differences between the two are badging, e.g. Victory has a checkered flag pattern on the door sill, if I recall. The R designation of the cf edition is not the same as the R in XKR. It merely means some R accessories were fitted, such as the leather steering wheel with the R embossed on the center and the shifter knob. The seats are trimmed with the Alcantara (sp?) phony suede. They look good and will suffer less splitting, but years of dragging my butt across the driver's seat has caused some piling, which I pick off occasionally. This is my third Jag, and as much as I love Jag woodwork, I have come to prefer my carbon "fiber" dash, etc. It still looks brand new and will never suffer the crazing and cracking so common to the wood. And the gauges look great set in the black and trimmed in chrome. I just think the styling of the cf is more suited to the raciness of the XK8. The wood, while pretty, is a bit staid. Same suspension as the "base" model, nothing fancy there. Same brakes, too. Really only cosmetic changes. Also they came with very handsome Atlas wheels. The fact that it is somewhat rare doesn't hurt the price. I paid $16,000 for mine in NY with 56k miles on it in late 2011. Now has 108,000 and has needed very little attention. Probably biggest fix was the brake light switch. Survived the green shower and now unlock and lock the top manually. Not a big deal and someday I will bite the bullet and replace the hoses. $16,000 seems pretty fair, but you may have some bargaining room there. It may be a little high, but that's offset by low mileage. Good luck!
If your wallet can take it, the next body style XKR (X150 Alloy) is quite a lot more car for the money. They don't look quite as good, but boy do they handle better and are MUCH faster. Even if you didn't get the R variant, you'd still be happier with the X150.

+1 if you don't need much storage in the trunk, I cannot fit my cart and clubs in the newer cars
