Potential purchase?
Hello all,
Today went to see rather tidy 2004 XK8 with 107k miles.
Both the rear diff.. axle seals are weeping - the dealer's Jag mechanic said it can be fixed but they'll look the same again after a couple of years...
Is this true?
To me it looks a big (ie expensive) repair job so perhaps a negotiating point.......
Also - the brake lines above the ABS unit (under the hood) are starting to corrode, is it a short section or does it involve a huge amount of work?
Many thanks in advance.
Andrew

Thanks Graham,
I'll see if I can get back to the dealer with a camera.
In the meantime the diff. doesn't seem to be dripping it's more
a greasy looking stain on both sides.
The brake line is corroded on the part just above the ABS unit (in the engine compartment) where it does some awkward bends. It is quoted in the MOT advisory as 'light corrosion'; to me it looks like small pitting.

Andrew,
That kind of minor staining is quite common on examples I've seen. Often difficult to be sure whether it's diff oil that's wept past the seal or grease thrown off the inboard half shaft joint. Not usually a cause for concern.
Once something has been listed as an MoT advisory, every future tester is going to see it when they login to VOSA to check the vehicle in for test. Regardless of how minor the corrosion appears, changing the brake pipe is a must to avoid some zealot upgrading an advisory to a fail.
