Default pothole damage to transmission?

Greetings,
I hit a Chicago special pothole in XK8, it made a loud clanking noise and shut off. When i got the nerve to restart - it gave me a lurch moving into drive and gives a transmission fault light. Can the pothole cause transmission fault? What sort of damage are we talking about? There is no apparent impact on the tranny or the underside.

Thanks for any suggestions to get the cat running normally again.

The loud clank and lurch are, unfortunately, signs of the dreaded 'A' drum failure. Cannot understand the relationship to the pothole unless it caused a call for a sudden downshift.

Start with this list of threads for info:

Sorry to welcome you to the forum with such potential bad news.

file a claim with the city, they have to pay your insurance deductible.

Happened to me a long time ago, I blew a tire, bent a rim, bent inner and outer tie rod and rack and pinion.Get witnesses and take pictures before its fixed.

There was recently a settlement in OHIO for millions for a pothole causing a deadly crash, where the state lost in court.Don't be scared, do it.

Thank you: Test Point, RJ237 and aode06 for your replies, your guidance and encouragement. Looks like I will need to battle the insurance company - the adjuster without any investigation denied my claim since there is "no visible damage". I am taking the car to a Jag certified mechanic to see what they think. And then as aode06, you suggested, go after the city! - Again Thanks

not trying to cause trouble, but do what you got to do, also get some witnesses.

Don't know your situation, but this is a very expensive job.

Make sure you get pictures here in Sc if the controlling government enity has no prior knowledge the claim will be denied. Also see if there are any utility marking to see if any repairs or work had been completed at the location. Blue paint for water, green for sewer, yellow for gas, red for power and orange for communications. Any signage work ahead , construction etc. if your tech cannot find any visual damage the governmental agency will more than likely call it mechanical failure. They will more than likely turn it over to their insurance company, and they will verify the questions that I just listed. Wish you the best of luck. Sorry I'm just a government employee that charged with saving the tax payers money. And yes we have not had a pay raise in 3 years. Jim
