Unhappy Power Steering leak

First post to the Forum, so Thanks in Advance! My daily Jag driver is an XK8 2001. I have been bearing with a slow but steady leak in my power steering system upon turning my wheel in either direction. I was going through about a container every two or three days. But yesterday, I loaned my father the car and I believe he must have run out of fluid before returning it home, and the steering wheel was virtually Stiff, so I refilled the reservoir, but now the leak is furious and I barely get a mile or two before the typical groaning and frothing of the reservoir base. Can anybody advise me as to a path of least resistance repair for this? I have a very competent Jag mechanic, but I would like to attempt this at home before crying uncle…

1) ID the leaking spot. Hose? Pump? Connector?

2)ID if hose is it high pressure hose or low pressure Hose? [Admittedly I may be driving ahead of my headlights here mate. Last and only time I did this was on my XJ6. It has high and low pressure hoses, I only assume all power steering units do]

3) remove and replace defective item.

I hope this helps get you started. I'm sure smarter folks will jump in and help.

can you spot where she's leaking from?

John

I was only going to add that if the leak is not obvious, check the bellows on the tie rods. Some have found them full of fluids on rare occasion when the rack leaks. More than likely, is is some form of rubber/aluminum joint that failed in the external plumbing. Remember, there is quite a bit of plumbing as there is a cooler going across the front of the radiator.

Welcome to the forum Busyboat007,

First trace the source of the leak:

Fortunately, there's not too many possibilities but running low and running dry could easily make things worse.

I thought I'd lost the plot when I couldn't work out why you posted in this thread started by busyboat007. Further digging and I found you started a thread with the same title but with a lower case p for power:

Looks like you are both chasing the same issue so I'll not move your post to your thread.
